Position Summary
The Restaurant Bartender is responsible for delivering exceptional beverage service to Chicago Yacht Club members and guests in the à la carte restaurant. This role requires strong knowledge of beverage, attention to detail, and a high level of professionalism in a member-focused environment. The Bartender ensures consistent drink quality, accurate member transactions, and responsible alcohol service while upholding all Club standards, policies, and legal regulations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare, mix, and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages promptly, accurately, and according to Club recipes and portion standards.
- Greet members and guests warmly, providing attentive, knowledgeable, and professional service.
- Recommend cocktails, wine, beer, and beverage pairings aligned with menu offerings and member preferences.
- Maintain awareness of individual member preferences, special requests, and service expectations.
- Monitor alcohol consumption and practice responsible service in compliance with Club policies and local/state laws.
Member Transactions & Club Procedures
- Accurately ring all beverage transactions through the POS system under the correct member ID account.
- Ensure proper use of member flags in accordance with Chicago Yacht Club procedures.
- Handle cash and credit card transactions accurately and responsibly.
Bar Operations & Organization
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and presentation of bar stations, storage areas, and service areas at all times.
- Restock liquor, beer, wine, mixers, garnishes, glassware, and supplies to ensure smooth service.
- Assist with opening and closing duties, including cleaning, restocking, securing inventory, and completing required checklists.
- Oversee and assist with barback duties as needed to ensure all tasks are completed efficiently.
Professional Standards & Team Support
- Maintain a polished, professional appearance and adhere to Club uniform standards.
- Attend pre-shift lineups, staff meetings, and required training sessions.
- Follow all safety, sanitation, food handling, and beverage service guidelines.
- Assist with lounge or table beverage service when needed.
- Support bar and restaurant team members during high-volume service periods.
- Complete other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Previous bartending experience required; restaurant or private club experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of cocktails, spirits, wine, beer, and basic mixology techniques.
- Ability to multitask, stay organized, and remain composed in fast-paced environments.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and guest service skills.
- Professional demeanor with a positive, team-oriented attitude.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and Club events.
- Ability to lift 40–50 pounds and remain on feet for extended periods.
Licenses & Certifications
- BASSET (or equivalent alcohol service certification) required.
- Food Handler certification required.
- Allergen certification preferred.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Any additional certifications as required by CYC leadership, HR, or the CYC Board.
Job Knowledge & Core Competencies
- Knowledge of standard drink recipes, beverage presentation, and service etiquette.
- Familiarity with POS systems preferred.
- Ability to follow Club policies and procedures consistently.
- Ability to perform assigned roles during emergency situations.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to service excellence.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, twist, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
- Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a fast-paced, high-traffic, and sometimes noisy restaurant environment.
