Position Summary The Music & Music Production Teacher is responsible for fostering a deep understanding of music theory, audio engineering, composition, performance, and digital audio workstation (DAW) techniques in a dynamic and creative learning environment. This educator will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons that develop students' creative expression, critical listening, and technical production skills. By creating a supportive studio and classroom culture, the teacher will inspire students to explore musical genres, modern recording technologies, and creative workflows, preparing them for academic success, creative literacy, and future careers in the music industry and creative arts.
Duties & Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum: Plan, prepare, and execute rigorous, standards-based daily lessons (e.g., NAfME/State Arts Standards) that accommodate diverse learning styles across grades 7-12. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies—such as ensemble direction, beat-making, MIDI sequencing, and collaborative songwriting—to encourage active student engagement.
Assessment & Portfolio Development: Design and administer formative and summative assessments, including practical audio mixing exams, performance rubrics, and portfolio projects. Utilize performance and project data to differentiate instruction, provide timely feedback, and support varying student skill levels.
Studio & Equipment Management: Establish and maintain a safe, highly structured studio and lab environment in strict accordance with equipment care and noise management protocols, ensuring proper handling, maintenance, and setup of microphones, instruments, audio interfaces, and digital recording gear.
Collaboration & Communication: Actively collaborate with fine arts colleagues, interdisciplinary teams, and school administration to align curricula, coordinate school concerts or showcases, and share best practices. Maintain open, proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student academic progress and performance schedules.
Professional Growth: Consistently participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with music education trends, recording techniques, and emerging breakthroughs in audio software and hardware technology.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music Production, Audio Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
Certification: Valid state teaching credential/license in Music (Grades 7-12 or K-12).
Experience: Prior student teaching or professional classroom, studio, or ensemble experience at the middle or high school level is highly desirable.
Background: Clean background check and compliance with all district employment requirements.
Technical Skills
Learning Management Systems (LMS): Proficiency with platforms like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology.
Audio & Music Tech: Ability to integrate digital audio workstations (e.g., Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, GarageBand, Soundtrap) along with MIDI controllers, virtual instruments, and notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Flat.io, Dorico) into daily instruction and lab work.
Data & Grading: Competency in using digital gradebooks and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Infinite Campus) to track student performance.
Productivity Suites: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
Core Skills & Competencies
Classroom & Studio Management: Proven ability to maintain a productive, structured, and respectful environment during both lectures and live recording or practice sessions.
Differentiated Instruction: Skill in modifying lessons and production assignments to support English Language Learners (ELL), students with IEPs/504 plans, and advanced musical learners.
Critical Listening & Creative Inquiry: Ability to guide students in analyzing song structure, sound design, audio frequency balance, and artistic intent across diverse musical genres.
Communication & Studio Culture: Exceptional communication skills, with a strong commitment to fostering creative risk-taking, safe equipment usage, and positive relationships with students and families.
