Heinz Nurseries is a family-owned and operated company that has proudly served the Tallahassee community for over 40 years. We specialize in nursery retail sales, landscaping, hardscaping, and lawn maintenance. We are looking for a dependable, confident, hands-on leader to join our retail nursery team.
The Position
The Nursery Operations Lead works closely with the Nursery Manager to keep the day-to-day operations of the outdoor nursery running smoothly. This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable directing employees while working right alongside them.
Responsibilities include:
- Direct the outdoor nursery team and prioritize daily tasks.
- Assist with receiving and organizing inventory.
- Assist customers with plants and products throughout the nursery.
- Help maintain plant health, displays, inventory and overall appearance of the nursery beds and "showcase" areas.
- Direct in maintanence of the nursery grounds
- Train and support nursery employees in the area of customer service, proper plant care, product handling and nursery procedures.
- Complete daily opening and closing responsibilities.
- Handle day-to-day issues and communicate larger concerns to the Nursery Manager.
- Ensure the Nursery Manager's direction and expectations are carried out in the outdoor nursery
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is someone who can take direction and then run with it. You should be comfortable being given an overall plan by the Nursery Manager and then make it happen outside.
We are looking for someone with:
- Previous nursery, garden center, landscaping, horticulture, retail, or similar experience.
- Knowledge of plants and general plant care
- Previous experience leading, supervising or directing employees is strongly preferred.
- A strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
- The ability to create a "team" environment among the employees.
- The ability to take direction, accept feedback, and work well with management.
- Basic computer and POS skills are a plus.
- Operate a bobcat skid steer when needed.
- Operate a sod lift (Navigator) when needed
- Able to lift 50 pounds and remain physically active throughout the workday.
Equipment experience is a plus, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to:
- Stand and walk for the majority of the work day
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Bend, squat, push, pull, reach, and move plants and materials
- Work outdoors for extended periods in the Florida heat, humidity, and rain
- Climb in and out of trailers using a ladder.
- Safely operate nursery equipment after appropriate training

Plant Knowledge - Have a solid understanding of plants and be willing to continue learning
Schedule
- Full-time
- Approximately 40 hours per week
- Weekend availability is required
- Schedule may vary based on seasonal needs and business demands
