Job Overview: Excavator Operator for Underground Utilities (CDL Required)
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Excavator Operator with a strong background in underground utility installation and operation of heavy equipment. This position requires a skilled individual who can operate excavators, trenchers, and other construction machinery with precision and efficiency. As a key part of our team, you will be instrumental in ensuring the safe and effective installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utilities, including water, sewer, gas, and electrical systems. A valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) and comprehensive mechanical knowledge are essential to this role.
Responsibilities
- Excavator and Heavy Equipment Operation:
Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, skid-steer loaders, bulldozers, and trenchers, to complete excavation tasks for underground utilities (water, sewer, gas, electrical lines). Ensure that all equipment is operated safely and efficiently according to job specifications.
- Underground Utility Installation & Excavation:
Perform precise digging, trenching, and backfilling tasks for utility installations, ensuring proper depth, alignment, and safety standards are met. Ensure compliance with local regulations and specifications for underground utility work.
- Site Preparation & Excavation:
Prepare and excavate trenches, pits, and holes for the installation of pipes, cables, and other utilities. Maintain accurate trench dimensions and alignment, ensuring the safety of workers and the integrity of the underground systems.
- Routine Maintenance & Inspections:
Conduct daily inspections and perform routine maintenance on heavy machinery and equipment to ensure optimal performance. Identify and troubleshoot mechanical issues and collaborate with maintenance teams to address any necessary repairs.
Follow all safety protocols and OSHA guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) and ensure that all team members adhere to safety practices. Keep work areas clean and organized to minimize accidents and injuries.
- Coordination & Communication:
Work closely with site supervisors, foremen, and other operators to plan and execute excavation tasks in alignment with project timelines. Maintain clear communication with crew members and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and resolve issues promptly.
- Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and job progress. Report any issues or potential hazards to site supervisors and follow up on corrective actions to prevent project delays or safety concerns.
Skills & Qualifications
- Heavy Equipment Operation:
Proven experience operating heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, and other machinery used in underground utility work. Ability to work in tight spaces and handle complex excavation tasks with precision.
Strong mechanical aptitude to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment malfunctions on-site. Experience with basic equipment maintenance and repair is essential.
- Underground Utility Experience:
Knowledge of underground utility installation techniques, including trenching, pipe laying, and backfilling, is highly preferred. Familiarity with safety protocols specific to underground utility work.
A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required, as this position may involve transporting equipment and materials to and from construction sites.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and project specifications to ensure the excavation work is done to precise measurements and according to code.
- Problem-Solving & Adaptability:
Ability to make quick decisions on the job site to overcome challenges related to equipment operation or unforeseen conditions in the excavation area.
A strong commitment to maintaining a safe work environment. Familiarity with OSHA regulations and the ability to enforce safety standards on the job site.
- Team-Oriented Communication:
Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with supervisors, other equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors. Ability to provide clear updates on job progress and work as part of a cohesive team.
- Physical Stamina & Endurance:
Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including exposure to extreme weather, uneven terrain, and extended hours when needed.
