Job Description for High School Academic Tutor
Responsibilities/Tasks:
- Assists high school students in all academic subject areas in small groups or individually
- Maintains a student roster and is responsible for assuring all students sign in and out daily
- Has strong tutoring abilities, specifically, but not limited to math and science in every grade level ranging from 9th to 12th grade, basic to advanced courses (i.e. Algebra 1a and 1b, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.)
- Teaches study skills by way of assisting students with their daily homework tasks
- Provide creative and innovative instructional methods for teaching homework strategies after school
- Maintains discipline and classroom management
- Flexible with teaching methods
- Employs creative problem-solving techniques
- Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized environment and encouraging students to do the same
- Readily accessible and approachable, it is encouraged that the tutor circulate the room from student to student, not spending too much time with one particular student
- Pro-active and makes use of any down time by initiating additional options, such as an educational game, trivia, a mentor session with a student, etc. Keeping in mind that there should always be mentor/student engagement
- The tutor may be approached by students regarding college prep, so it is encouraged for tutors to keep up to date with related information (i.e. FAFSA, application process, scholarships, etc.)
Qualifications:
· Experience: At least 1-2 years experience working with youth (ages 14-18) preferred. 1-2 years tutoring in a non-profit youth organization or school campus setting preferred.
· Education/Knowledge: At least 2 years of college-level courses in community college or university
· Skills and Abilities: Strong skills in all academic areas for high school youth. Have a good rapport with high school youth. Strong leadership skills, ability to take initiative, be a problem solver, demonstrate strong discipline skills, and outstanding interpersonal skills.
· Have the ability to relate well to diverse individuals and to be flexible and open to new ideas. Be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
· Bilingual skills: Bilingual in Spanish or Korean preferred
· Required pre-requisites prior to working: Must have current TB test results (every 4 years), CPR/First Aid certification (every 2 years), and Live Scan federal and state fingerprinting (one time only)
Hours:
- Able to work Monday-Friday from 3:00pm-6:00pm
- Tuesdays 2:00pm-5:00pm
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
