POSITION SUMMARY
Assists the school nurse or nurse facilitator in caring for the health needs of students and staff within the district. Under the direct and indirect supervision of a school nurse, performs the essential functions of a health assistant. Additionally, supports district-wide health initiatives, compliance processes, and health information systems.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs routine first aid procedures; assists in screening ill or injured students.

Upon evaluation, provides appropriate treatment indicated or refers seriously ill or injured students to emergency medical services (911).

Maintains a daily log of student visits, documenting reasons and actions taken; enters data into computerized systems.

Serves as a liaison between students, district staff, school nurse, parents, and community health/social service agencies.

Maintains accurate student health records, including health histories, and specialized records.

Assists students with management of chronic health conditions, i.e., asthma, seizures, diabetes.

Conducts hearing and vision screenings; records and communicates results to appropriate parties.

Notifies parents/guardians of failed screenings and assists with follow-up procedures.

Reports communicable diseases to appropriate health agencies in accordance with guidelines

Gathers, interprets, and inputs immunization records from parents, healthcare providers, and agencies into the student information system.

Performs clerical duties as needed, including answering phones and managing correspondence

Maintains and orders health office supplies

Assists with medication administration and monitoring of students with chronic health conditions

Performs related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong computer experience required

Knowledge of basic first aid procedures, including CPR and AED use
-
Understanding of universal precautions and bloodborne pathogen protocols

Proficiency in using medical equipment such as thermometers and blood pressure monitors

Ability to recognize signs symptoms of anaphylaxis and appropriate use of an Epi-Pen
-
Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of respiratory distress
-
Ability to recognize signs and symptoms hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle a variety of situations with sound judgment

Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and the community
-
Knowledge of and compliance with federal/state laws, district procedures, and board policies

Ability to manage sensitive health situations professionally and compassionately
QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent
-
Minimum of 1 year experience working with children
-
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a healthcare or medical setting

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Clerical experience preferred
-
Experience with student information systems (e.g., Synergy) preferred

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that meets minimum requirements
