JOB DESCRIPTION:
PRIMARY DUTY:
The successful candidate will serve as a multiage teacher and educational leader at a kindergarten through sixth grade laboratory school where commitment to curriculum development, educational leadership, research, multi-age education, and child-centered teaching practices are valued.
The teacher will provide elementary students with exemplary instruction within a laboratory school setting modeling culturally sensitive teaching. The teacher will work collaboratively with University faculty to facilitate and evaluate practicum students through the modeling of effective teaching practices and opportunities to engage in superior clinical experiences.
The teacher is responsible for promoting high expectations for students, communicating effectively with parents, developing curriculum, and working collaboratively with both Horace Mann and School of Education faculty and staff. The position includes supervision and evaluation of student employees, practicum students, and implementation of state and national standards into the curriculum.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide research-based instruction in a laboratory school setting
- Facilitate, evaluate, and provide timely feedback to practicum students about instruction in the areas of literacy, math, science, social studies, and project-based learning
- Participate in highly collaborative, professional learning activities with colleagues
- Build relationships with families and community members to promote regular parent involvement
- Collaborate and co-teach with an instructional aide
- Supervise and evaluate practicum students completing clinical experience
- Exhibit strong skills in educational technology, research, and collaboration
- Create curriculum and lesson plans in all curricula areas
- Demonstrate a growth mindset, initiative, and actively collaborate in research of innovative practices
- Model a nurturing disposition with an excellent ability to communicate effectively with young children
- Integrate technology across the curriculum
- Serve as the fourth through sixth grade academic extension co-sponsor (i.e., math contest, spelling bee, geography bee)
- Effectively communicate with parents, college students, University faculty and staff
- Assist with university and program accreditation (AAQEP, HLC, CAEP, DESE, and/or other)
- Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Education (preferred Master’s Degree)
Certification/License: Missouri Elementary Teaching Certification (or the ability to attain certification)
Experience: Three years of experience in a school setting (preferably in elementary)
Skills: Integration of technology and online course management system in teaching; strong communication skills; collaboration skills; ability to work well with others toward common goals; strong organizational skills
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Collaborative team-based faculty working in an academic environment
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will supervise observation, practicum students and graduate assistants
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED:
Interactive SMART Board, iPads, laptop computers, document cameras, online course management system
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Actively instructing elementary students from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the regular school year (August – May). Instruction of Practicum students may occur from 3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Participation in after school committees, family activity nights, and faculty meetings as assigned. Ability to complete essential classroom functions.
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
