Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) serves Wyandotte County, a community in Northeastern Kansas with a population of around 170,000, with five library branches and three mobile libraries. KCKPL was formed in 1893 and came under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education in 1899, where it remains today. The mission of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County.
Job Goal:
The Information Technology Specialist provides technical support to library staff by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware, software, and peripherals across the library system. This position works directly with the Network Services Supervisor and IT Manager to ensure library technologies remain secure, functional, and up-to-date while also assisting with systems upgrades, documentation, and equipment deployment.
Essential Functions
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and peripheral malfunctions for staff and public devices.
- Configure, install, and deploy standard operating systems and software used across the library system.
- Image and deploy new computers and related equipment.
- Maintain and organize public labs, network closets, and inventory areas.
- Respond to service tickets (BOSS) and maintain records of completed work.
- Support network printers, scanners, and copiers across branches.
- Communicate effectively with library staff and supervisors regarding equipment needs and technology status.
- Assist with mass installations and special technology projects.
- Stay informed on software and hardware updates and proactively recommend necessary upgrades.
- Provide timely customer support both remotely and in person.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, or equivalent mix of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience supporting computer hardware, software, and peripherals in a multi-location environment.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and familiarity with a wide range of technologies including desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and networking equipment.
- Experience with Windows OS, imaging tools, and basic network administration preferred.
- Ability to relay technical concepts clearly to non-technical users.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
- Ability to provide own transportation for travel between branches.
- Must be physically able to stand, kneel, walk, stoop, and lift up to 35 pounds.
- Must pass a background check according to library standards.
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and additional hours as needed.
