Job Description
The Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher Assistant at United Community School provides targeted instructional, behavioral, and specialized support for students with diverse learning needs within a Life Skills special education classroom. Working under the direct guidance of the EC Lead Teacher and EC Coordinator, the assistant plays a vital role in executing individual education plans and ensuring a safe, structured, and enriching learning environment.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Instructional Support: Facilitating modified small-group reading and math lessons, implementing specific IEP accommodations, and reinforcing individualized learning targets.
- Behavioral & Specialized Intervention: Implementing positive behavior support plans, monitoring student engagement, and providing gentle, proactive redirection when necessary.
- Data Collection & Documentation: Assisting the lead teacher with routine compliance tracking, including documenting student progress toward daily IEP goals and tracking behavioral trends.
- Transition & Physical Assistance: Safely guiding and assisting students during high-sensory transition periods throughout the school day, including restroom breaks, recess, cafeteria visits, and special area classes.
- Clerical Coordination: Preparing specialized tactile materials, organizing sensory tools, filing student work progress reports, and maintaining an organized, safe classroom setup.
- Community Engagement: Accompanying and actively supporting students during school-wide activities and community field trips to ensure full accessibility and safety.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Experience: Direct experience working with children with special needs or developmental delays in an educational, individual, or group care setting is highly preferred.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Preference will be given to candidates holding an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, or professional certifications in child development, special education, or related fields.
