About the Position
Hercon Construction is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to join our team in Columbia, Missouri. This position will primarily oversee custom residential construction, major renovations, additions, and historic projects, with opportunities to work on select commercial projects as needed.
Hercon's projects are highly customized and require a superintendent who understands construction, takes ownership of the jobsite, communicates well, and pays close attention to quality and detail. Many of our projects involve occupied homes and direct interaction with homeowners, architects, designers, subcontractors, and vendors, so professionalism and communication are just as important as construction knowledge.
This is not a production-home superintendent position. Our projects vary significantly in scope and complexity, and we are looking for someone who enjoys solving problems and taking responsibility for getting a project built correctly.
What You'll Do
- Manage day-to-day field operations for assigned construction projects
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, Hercon employees, deliveries, inspections, and jobsite activities
- Read and understand construction plans, specifications, and project documents
- Plan upcoming work and ensure labor, materials, and subcontractors are ready when needed
- Monitor quality, schedule, safety, and jobsite organization
- Communicate regularly with Hercon project managers regarding project progress, decisions, scheduling, and potential issues
- Develop positive, professional relationships with clients while working in and around their homes
- Identify problems early and work with the project team to develop practical solutions
- Perform quality-control and punch-list inspections throughout the project
- Maintain clean, safe, professional jobsites
- Assist with hands-on construction work when necessary while keeping project supervision and coordination as the primary responsibility
What We're Looking For
- Significant construction experience with a strong understanding of how buildings are put together
- Previous experience as a construction superintendent, foreman, lead carpenter, or similar field leadership position preferred
- Experience with custom residential construction, remodeling, renovations, or other detailed construction strongly preferred
- Ability to read and interpret plans and construction documents
- Strong knowledge of construction sequencing and subcontractor coordination
- Ability to plan ahead and keep multiple activities moving
- High standards for workmanship, quality, and jobsite organization
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Professional demeanor and good judgment when interacting with clients
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned projects
- Willingness to be hands-on when circumstances require it
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
We are open to an experienced superintendent as well as an exceptional foreman or lead carpenter who has the construction knowledge, leadership ability, and judgment to step into greater project responsibility.
