A well-established, growing distribution company is seeking an experienced Director of Transportation to lead a high-performing transportation operation serving customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing all transportation functions, including fleet operations, driver leadership, DOT compliance, safety, routing, customer service, financial performance, and continuous operational improvement.
The successful candidate will be a strategic, hands-on leader with a proven ability to build strong teams, improve operational efficiency, and deliver exceptional customer service.
Responsibilities
- Lead all transportation operations, including drivers, dispatch, routing, transportation supervisors, and fleet performance.
- Ensure safe, timely, and efficient delivery operations while maintaining exceptional customer service standards.
- Maintain compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company policies.
- Develop and monitor departmental budgets, labor costs, fleet expenses, fuel usage, and transportation KPIs.
- Analyze transportation metrics and implement process improvements that increase productivity and reduce operating costs.
- Oversee fleet maintenance strategy and equipment utilization in partnership with maintenance providers.
- Recruit, hire, coach, mentor, and develop transportation leadership and driving teams.
- Lead accident investigations, safety initiatives, claims management, and corrective action programs.
- Collaborate with Warehouse, Operations, Customer Service, Purchasing, and Executive Leadership to ensure seamless execution.
- Drive accountability through performance management, scorecards, and operational reporting.
- Champion a culture focused on safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent transportation leadership experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive transportation management experience.
- Demonstrated success leading managers, supervisors, dispatch, and CDL driver teams.
- Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA compliance, Hours of Service, fleet safety, and transportation operations.
- Experience managing private fleet distribution operations is strongly preferred.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, labor, routing, and transportation costs.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with transportation management systems, routing software, telematics, and Microsoft Office.
