Lead Dispatcher — Medical Courier Services
Company: Accurate Courier Services (ACS)
Location: San Diego, California
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Reports To: Dispatch Manager / Operations Manager
Schedule: M-F First Shift with rotating on-call; (medical courier operations run extended, weekend, and holiday hours)
Patient First — Why This Role Matters
At Accurate Courier Services, we are a dedicated medical courier company built on a single principle: Patient First. Every specimen, every pharmaceutical, every delivery we move is part of someone's care. We don't think of ourselves as a transportation company that happens to serve healthcare. We are a healthcare partner whose expertise is logistics, and exceptional patient care is the standard we measure every decision against.
The Lead Dispatcher sits at the heart of that promise. This is a hands-on, in-the-seat role for someone who thrives in the fast pace of live dispatch and takes personal ownership of getting every order where it needs to be, on time and done right. When a hospital, lab, or pharmacy relies on us, you're the person making it happen.
About the Role
We are seeking a sharp, experienced Lead Dispatcher to run daily dispatch operations for our San Diego market. This is our most senior dispatch role on the floor. You'll be actively dispatching on-demand (STAT/immediate) orders and coordinating routed drivers throughout the day, while serving as the go-to point person and steady hand for the dispatch team.
This is not a desk-and-meetings management job. It's a working lead role for someone who wants to stay close to the action, own the San Diego board, and be the person others turn to when things get busy or complicated. We're setting the bar high for this position and offering a premium hourly rate to match because the San Diego market deserves a strong, reliable dispatcher who can carry it.
Key Responsibilities
- Dispatch on-demand / STAT orders in real time, triaging by urgency and assigning the right driver to meet every delivery window.
- Coordinate routed drivers across the San Diego market, keeping scheduled daily stops running smoothly and adjusting on the fly when disruptions hit.
- Own the San Diego dispatch board end to end you are the primary set of hands and eyes on daily operations.
- Serve as the lead point of contact on the floor, fielding driver questions, resolving day-of issues, and keeping the operation moving.
- Monitor live fleet activity through dispatch and GPS/telematics software, getting ahead of delays before they become service failures.
- Communicate directly with clients (hospitals, labs, pharmacies, clinics) on status, ETAs, and issue resolution.
- Support and mentor fellow dispatchers, sharing best practices and helping cover and coordinate during peak periods.
- Uphold chain-of-custody and compliance standards, including proper handling of biohazardous and temperature-controlled materials.
- Escalate appropriately to the Dispatch Manager and help ensure smooth shift handoffs and coverage.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of dispatch, logistics, or transportation coordination experience, with a proven track record as a top-performing dispatcher.
- Ability to independently run a busy dispatch operation and make sound calls under pressure.
- Strong working knowledge of dispatch/routing software and GPS fleet tracking systems.
- Excellent multitasking, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
- Clear, professional communication with drivers, clients, and teammates.
- Solid understanding of California and federal DOT regulations and driver hours-of-service requirements.
- Reliability and ownership mindset as this role is the backbone of the San Diego market.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
