About the Role
Some people just drive boats. At Marimed Foundation, our Captain helps change lives.
We are seeking an experienced USCG 100 Ton Near Coastal Master with Auxiliary Sail Endorsement to take command of the SSV Makani Olu. This is a leadership role for a mariner who understands that the real impact of seamanship happens when a vessel becomes a classroom, and every voyage becomes a career-shaping experience.
This is not a “just run the ship” position. It is a blend of captain, educator, mentor, and steward of a floating learning environment—where students gain real sea time, confidence, and a pathway into the maritime industry.
About Marimed Foundation
Marimed Foundation is a mission-driven maritime training organization rooted in Hawaiʻi and grounded in community, safety, and opportunity. Our culture is built on ʻohana—we work hard, take care of each other, and believe deeply in what we are building together.
We prepare students for maritime careers through structured training programs that combine classroom learning, hands-on instruction, and real-world sea time aboard our vessel.
We also support research and charter operations in partnership with organizations conducting work in the Pacific, including voyages into the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

This is not a live aboard position. You will still be expected to have a life ashore, whether you planned on it or not. We also recognize that moving to Hawaiʻi can be a big step, so we will help connect you with resources to find an amazing place to live on land so you can spend your energy focusing on the work, not hunting for housing.
