We are seeking a highly qualified NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Lead Instructor to support a potential long-term federal training contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This position is contingent upon contract award.
Position Overview
The selected instructor will deliver recurring, instructor-led NFPA 101 Life Safety Code courses for federal employees. Each course will consist of approximately 24 hours of instruction delivered over three consecutive days.
The training will focus on the current edition of NFPA 101, including core life-safety requirements, code navigation, and provisions applicable to detention and correctional occupancies.
The anticipated contract may include up to four classes per year over a base year and multiple option years. Each class may include up to 30 participants.
Primary Responsibilities
- Deliver three-day, 24-hour NFPA 101 Life Safety Code training courses.
- Explain the NFPA code-development process and the organization of the current Life Safety Code.
- Teach participants how to navigate and apply NFPA 101 requirements.
- Provide detailed instruction on Chapters 1 through 10.
- Provide specialized instruction on new and existing detention and correctional occupancies.
- Incorporate practical federal and correctional-facility scenarios.
- Develop interactive exercises, case studies, and code-navigation activities.
- Update course content when NFPA standards or regulatory requirements change.
- Prepare professional presentations, student manuals, reference materials, and exercises.
- Provide certificates of completion and assist with course evaluations.
- Coordinate with NewGen program management and federal customer representatives.
- Comply with all federal facility security, conduct, and identification requirements.
- Support virtual delivery through Microsoft Teams when requested.
- Assist in identifying or serving as a qualified backup instructor when necessary.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must meet all or substantially all of the following qualifications:
- At least five years of full-time professional experience in fire protection.
- At least three years of experience teaching NFPA 101, life-safety, fire-code, or closely related courses.
- Direct experience delivering NFPA 101 Life Safety Code training.
- Currently serving on an NFPA technical committee or having served on an NFPA committee within the past five years.
- Strong knowledge of the current edition of NFPA 101.
- Experience developing and delivering instructor-led technical training.
- Ability to provide detailed examples of prior NFPA 101 courses taught.
- Familiarity with detention, correctional, institutional, secure, healthcare, or similar occupancies.
- Ability and willingness to travel to Aurora, Colorado and potentially other federal facilities.
- Ability to pass federal facility background and security screening requirements.
- Excellent presentation, communication, and classroom-management skills.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Fire Protection Specialist certification.
- Licensed Fire Protection Engineer.
- ICC Fire Inspector, Fire Plans Examiner, or related credentials.
- Current or former fire marshal, code official, plans examiner, or fire-protection consultant.
- Experience training federal, state, correctional, military, or institutional personnel.
- Experience applying NFPA 101 to jails, prisons, detention centers, or secure facilities.
- Existing three-day NFPA 101 curriculum or course syllabus.
- Experience developing practical inspection checklists and correctional-facility case studies.
- Ability to provide a similarly qualified backup instructor.
- Small-business ownership or affiliation with a small fire-protection training company.

Schedule
Courses are expected to be scheduled with approximately 45 days’ advance notice.
Typical classroom hours will be:
7:30 AM to 4:30 PM local time for three consecutive days
The selected instructor must be available for recurring assignments throughout the potential contract period.
Compensation
Competitive contract compensation based on qualifications, experience, curriculum ownership, materials requirements, and travel needs.

Travel, lodging, per diem, and related expenses may be included in a negotiated fixed-price arrangement.
