We are seeking a motivated Histotechnologist (HT or HTL ASCP) to join our laboratory team.
About the Position
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Histotechnologist to take ownership of the complete histology workflow in a gastrointestinal pathology laboratory. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in every step of the specimen journey, from accessioning and grossing routine biopsy specimens through tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, quality control, and case completion. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working independently, takes pride in producing high-quality work, and values seeing a case through from start to finish. The way the workflow is completed can be decided by you, so long as turn-around-time expectations are met, offering you great flexibility in your working hours.
Responsibilities
- Gross routine surgical pathology specimens, including gastrointestinal biopsies, small polyps, and other uncomplicated specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and under the direction of the Laboratory Director/Pathologist.
- Receive, accession, and process surgical pathology specimens.
- Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping.
- Prepare high-quality H&E stained slides.
- Perform routine histochemical special stains including:
- Alcian Blue/PAS
- GMS
- PAS-Fungus
- Giemsa
- Iron
- Trichrome
- Maintain quality control and quality assurance documentation.
- Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and applicable New York and New Jersey laboratory regulations.
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and specimen identification.
- Participate in laboratory quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification (or equivalent experience meeting laboratory personnel qualifications).
- Experience in tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, and histochemical special stains.
- Ability to gross routine biopsy and small surgical pathology specimens, including gastrointestinal biopsies and small polyps.
- Excellent attention to detail and specimen identification practices.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a gastrointestinal pathology laboratory.
- Experience with Leica and/or Sakura histology instrumentation.
- Experience with CAP-accredited laboratories.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and regulatory compliance.
Education
- Associates degree (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree (Preferred)
Certification
- HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) Required
Compensation
Hourly Rate: $40-50/hr depending on experience and expertise.
Work Schedule
Dependent on specimen submission from surgery centers and physicians. Expect to be on-site 2-4 days a week, roughly 15-30 hours depending on volume. Flexibility to complete all work on the same day or split into multiple days can be determined by yourself with input from the pathologist (e.g. running a process overnight to complete the following day).
