About You
Summary
The Meat & Seafood Category Manager position at Morton Williams is a leadership role which will serve as a key member of the company leadership team across all 17 locations. This role will be responsible for overseeing the sourcing, quality control, merchandising, and operational performance of our fresh meat and seafood offerings companywide. The Meat & Seafood Category Manager will help promote a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture. In this role, you will be expected to leverage your knowledge, experience, and expertise to drive sales growth, implement strategic ideas & initiatives and enhance customer satisfaction. You will also be responsible for the execution of proper inventory practices, category management, oversee purchasing and buying responsibilities, coordinate pricing structures, collaborate on marketing, customer service, and e-commerce projects, and more.
Essential Functions
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the Meat & Seafood Department, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
- Maintain and develop relationships with vendors and partners in order to receive quality products, remain consistent with effective pricing, advance sales opportunities, and deliver on customer expectations.
· Develop and execute departmental strategies to optimize product assortment, product mix, inventory levels and pricing, ensuring alignment with customer demand and market trends.
· Track sales, manage inventory, and order merchandise to ensure freshness, meet customer demands and ensure profitability of department.
· Development of Meat & Seafood Department Managers and Team Clerks to ensure team alignment, clear expectations, roles and responsibilities, accountability, skills and abilities, product and department knowledge, and more.
· Lead staffing, hiring, training, and disciplinary actions needs within the department.
· Provide training on department procedures, customer and counter service training, knife and equipment handling, safe food handling, and sanitation regulations.
· Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures with respect to department operations, quality, safe food handling, to ensure compliance state, federal and OSHA safety and sanitation regulations.
· Ensure that staff work safely and comply with local, state, and government weights, measures and labeling laws.
· Execute localized merchandising plans, set up and create display for new or seasonal items to drive sales.
- Conduct regular quality inspections and audits to ensure compliance with food safety standards and company policies.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, maintaining a safe work environment.
Qualifications
- 4-5+ years of experience in meat and seafood management or a similar role within the department or overall food retail industry.
- Associate’s degree in business, agriculture, or a related field, preferred.
- Strong understanding of meat and seafood quality standards, sourcing, and supply chain management.
- Proven experience in team leadership, with a track record of driving results and developing talent.
- Ability to read and interpret financial statements, firm grasp of margin and pricing.
· Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job.
- Supervisory experience--training, evaluating, directing.
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to build relationships with diverse teams.
· Comfort with a flexible work schedule to accommodate business needs and operational demands.
· Experience in retail, grocery, or other fast-paced service industry environments is strongly preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and inventory management software.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
· Frequent travel to multiple store locations within NYC area.
· Ability to work on a varied, flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as needed.
