Under the general direction of the Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure (ZEVI) Program Director, a Principal Transportation Engineer, the incumbent will have overall responsibility for the oversight and management of delivering statewide ZEVI initiatives, including planning, deploying, and maintaining Level 3 (DC/Fast Charging) electric vehicle chargers to support the Department’s fleet electrification goals.
The incumbent will guide project teams in implementing ZEVI projects, ensuring timely delivery within established scope, schedule, and budget parameters. The ZEVI Program Manager provides strategic leadership and technical expertise to multi-functional teams, including the Division of Equipment, Caltrans districts, and utility partners. The incumbent identifies and resolves critical issues affecting program delivery and advises the ZEVI Program Director and the Division Chief of Maintenance on program milestones, challenges, and solutions. This position is accountable for aligning ZEVI program goals with Caltrans’ 10-year plan to replace its vehicle fleet with zero-emission vehicles and achieve climate sustainability targets.
The incumbent represents the ZEVI Program Director in discussions with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, utility providers, and other state agencies, fostering partnerships that advance the program’s objectives. The position is integral to delivering the Department’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving a sustainable, zero-emission future for California’s transportation system.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
