Veterinary Assistant/Veterinary Technician
Mount Carmel Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Registered Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant to join our team. Full-time and part-time candidates will be considered.
This is not an entry-level position for someone with no experience in a veterinary clinical setting. We are looking for someone who already has hands-on experience in a veterinary hospital and is ready to contribute to patient care, client communication, and team workflow.
At MCAH, our technicians and assistants play an important role in supporting doctors, caring for patients, communicating with clients, and helping the hospital run smoothly. The right candidate will be dependable, observant, detail-oriented, and able to think ahead in a busy clinical environment.
We are happy to train the right person in our systems, standards, and workflows, but applicants should already have experience working in a veterinary hospital setting.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting veterinarians with outpatient appointments
- Obtaining patient histories and accurate vital signs
- Preparing exam rooms, supplies, and equipment for appointments and procedures
- Safely and effectively restraining patients during exams and treatments
- Collecting and preparing laboratory samples, including urine, fecal, ear cytology, and blood samples
- Preparing and dispensing medications as directed by the veterinarian
- Explaining medication instructions, preventatives, vaccines, and basic home care to clients
- Supporting doctors with surgery and dentistry, including patient preparation, procedure setup, and anesthesia monitoring when appropriate to experience level
- Monitoring hospitalized patients and performing treatments as directed
- Placing catheters, drawing blood, and preparing samples for testing when appropriate to experience level
- Assisting with dental procedures, dental radiography, and dental prophylaxis when appropriate to experience level
- Communicating clearly and professionally with clients, doctors, and team members
- Maintaining accurate medical records
- Helping maintain a clean, organized, and efficient hospital environment
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in a veterinary clinical setting and be comfortable supporting doctors, patients, clients, and the medical team in a busy small animal practice.
For veterinary assistant candidates, relevant experience may include outpatient appointment support, patient handling and restraint, obtaining histories and vital signs, preparing samples, assisting with treatments, client communication, and maintaining accurate medical records.
For technician candidates, stronger consideration will be given to those with additional experience in areas such as inpatient care, surgery, dentistry, anesthesia monitoring, laboratory skills, catheter placement, blood draws, and advanced patient care.
We welcome candidates who are still growing in their veterinary careers and are eager to build on their existing clinical experience. A strong fit for our team is someone who is smart, curious, dependable, collaborative, and committed to learning.
Important qualities for this role include:
- Dependability and trustworthiness
- Good judgment and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills
- Keen observation skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to ask questions, learn, and grow
- Professionalism with clients and coworkers
- Ability to stay calm and organized during busy or stressful moments
Applicants must have reliable transportation and the ability to work shifts based on hospital staffing needs, including up to two evenings per week and two weekend shifts per month. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay starts at $21/hour and increases based on role, experience, skill level, and clinical responsibilities. Higher compensation is available for candidates with stronger technical experience, including inpatient care, surgery, dentistry, anesthesia monitoring, laboratory skills, catheter placement, blood draws, and other advanced clinical responsibilities.
Final compensation will depend on demonstrated experience, training, independence, and fit for the role.
