SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:
Indianapolis Public Schools is seeking a visionary and high-octane Director of Education Technology to bridge the gap between technical infrastructure and classroom innovation. As a key leader within the Systems office, you will be responsible for ensuring that our digital ecosystem doesn't just "work," but actively accelerates student achievement and empowers our educators. This role reports to the Chief Systems Officer.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
The following outlines this position's core duties and responsibilities and provides a sample overview of what your day-to-day may look like.
Core Responsibilities:
-
Vision & Strategy: Design and execute a district-wide digital learning roadmap that ensures equitable access to technology for all 30,000+ IPS students.
-
System Implementation: Oversee the lifecycle of instructional technology tools (LMS, student devices, and digital curricula), ensuring seamless integration with existing IT infrastructure.
-
Project Leadership: Lead large-scale tech deployments—from pilot programs to district-wide rollouts—ensuring they are delivered on time and with high user adoption.
-
Capacity Building: Partner with the Learning team to design professional development that shifts technology use from "substitution" to "redefinition" of the learning experience.
-
Data Stewardship: Use data analytics to evaluate the ROI of educational software and hardware, making high-stakes recommendations on what to scale, pivot, or sunset.
Strategic Partnerships
To lead effectively, you won't work in a vacuum. You will be a master collaborator, partnering with:
-
The Chief Learning Officer & Learning Teams: To ensure digital tools align with state standards and instructional best practices.
The IT Operations Team: To coordinate the "behind the scenes" plumbing (bandwidth, security, and hardware) with the "front-of-house" instructional needs.
School Principals: To understand the unique cultural and technical needs of our diverse portfolio of schools.
External Vendors: To hold partners accountable for high-quality service and continuous product improvement.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING: SKILLS AND MINDSETS
We are looking for a leader who embodies these specific traits:
-
Strategic & Analytical Thinking: You are a natural problem solver who can efficiently grasp the "big picture" while quickly drilling down into root causes. You have a proven ability to chart a clear course through ambiguity and bring clarity to complex projects.
Agility in a Fast-Moving Organization: You aren't overwhelmed by shifting priorities or tight deadlines; you are inspired by them. You will be the backbone of our team, establishing the systems and project plans that allow us to remain productive and efficient under pressure.
Crisp, Clean Communication: Whether it’s a board presentation or an email to teachers, your messages are articulate and concise. You have the finesse to deliver tough news and the charisma to deliver inspiring ones.
Leadership Partnership: You know how to move people. You will regularly interact with stakeholders, motivating them to make both incremental improvements and bold, "quantum leap" changes.
Independent Initiative: You are eager to learn and ready to step up to the plate. You don’t wait for a roadmap—you help build it by identifying solutions independently.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or MBA preferred.
Experience: At least 5–7 years of experience in educational leadership, instructional technology, or project management. Experience in a large, urban school district is a significant plus.
Technical Savvy: Deep familiarity with K-12 ecosystems (e.g., Canvas, Clever, Google Workspace for Education) and a solid understanding of student data privacy laws (FERPA/CIPA).
Proven Results: A track record of managing complex, multi-million dollar projects or department-wide initiatives from conception to completion.
