Position Summary
The Registered Dietitian is responsible for planning and delivering evidence-based medical nutrition therapy to patients in accordance with current clinical standards, professional judgment, and departmental policies.
Working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Dietitian evaluates patients for nutritional risk, performs comprehensive nutrition assessments, develops individualized nutrition interventions, provides patient and family education, and monitors nutritional outcomes. The role also serves as a liaison between Dietary Patient Services and the medical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Review electronic medical records and daily status boards to establish and prioritize patient caseloads.
- Screen newly admitted patients and identify those at nutritional risk.
- Complete nutrition screenings, assessments, reassessments, and follow-ups according to established guidelines.
- Review medical records and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare staff to evaluate nutritional status.
- Apply the Nutrition Care Process when conducting assessments and developing individualized nutrition interventions.
- Perform Nutrition-Focused Physical Exams (NFPE) when clinically appropriate to identify and assess patients at risk for malnutrition.
- Consult with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nursing staff, and other members of the care team regarding nutrition interventions and care plans.
- Document nutrition assessments, interventions, counseling, and follow-up activities accurately in the medical record.
- Provide individualized nutrition counseling and education to patients and families based on diet orders, provider requests, and patient needs.
- Participate in medical and discharge rounds as needed.
- Provide nutrition assessments and counseling in outpatient clinic areas when assigned.
- Monitor patient progress and reassess nutritional needs according to established timeframes.
- Complete daily productivity documentation and submit required information to clinical nutrition leadership.
- Conduct test tray audits and other Food & Nutrition Services quality audits as assigned.
- Participate in performance improvement and quality initiatives.
- Assist with orientation and in-service training for new department employees.
- Conduct nutrition-related in-services for hospital staff and community members as requested.
- Assist with the development and implementation of patient nutrition care programs.
- Support hospital and community nutrition programs and initiatives.
- Maintain effective working relationships with physicians, nurses, hospital staff, volunteers, patients, and families.
- Promote patient safety and provide care in an environment that minimizes the risk of medical and healthcare errors.
- Maintain flexibility and professionalism while managing multiple priorities and potentially stressful situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Completion of an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
- Completion of an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship (DI) with at least 1,000 supervised practice hours.
Certifications & Licensure
- Successful completion of the national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Current Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) status.
- Maintain continuing education requirements, including 15 continuing education credits annually, with documentation provided to clinical nutrition leadership.
- Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist (CDN) in New York State preferred.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong clinical nutrition assessment and medical nutrition therapy skills.
- Knowledge of nutrition screening, malnutrition identification, and Nutrition-Focused Physical Examination.
- Ability to apply critical thinking and clinical judgment to develop appropriate nutrition care plans.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Excellent interpersonal and patient counseling skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing clinical priorities.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and menu management systems such as CBORD and Meditech.
- Ability to work effectively in a hospital/clinical environment.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, talk, hear, and lift as required throughout the workday.
Preferred Experience
- 1+ year of clinical Registered Dietitian experience preferred.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a Registered Dietitian with strong inpatient clinical nutrition skills, excellent patient education abilities, and experience working within a multidisciplinary hospital environment. Candidates should be comfortable performing nutrition assessments, utilizing NFPE, identifying malnutrition risk, documenting in an EMR, and developing individualized nutrition interventions.

Pay: $50.00 - $55.00 per hour
