Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Case Manager/Advocate to join our dedicated team. In this vital role, you will assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and their children and will be responsible for case management, court advocacy, and hospital accompaniment for forensic examinations of victims. This position will provide education and training to community partners, provide information and referrals and implement and coordinate support groups in rural, underserved areas. This position will also be responsible for the planning of special events during both Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness months. This position is supervised by and reports to the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Services Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Court Advocacy
· Provide trauma-informed case management to shelter and community-based clients
· Provide after-hours shelter coverage on an as needed basis, to include determining the admission and release of clients
· Maintain contact with both Madeline’s House and community-based DV/SA clients for follow-up assistance; offer referrals to community-based resources such as counseling, legal aid, housing, medical services and financial assistance
· Facilitate the registration of client’s children in school and maintain regular communication with school personnel
· Assist clients with applying for benefits through the VA Department of Social Services; assistance includes documentation, communication and transportation
· Document all client’s contact information and complete all required case forms
· Manage incoming hotline communications at the shelter; conducting the Danger Assessments, safety planning, and completing all required documentation
· Conduct follow-up calls to domestic violence and sexual assault victims, during crisis and after, for continued safety planning and to advise them of their rights/legal resources
· Enter all client data into the VaData system.
· Document all case management services provided in accordance with agency policies and confidentiality requirements
· Assist with other duties assigned by the DV/SA Services Coordinator
· Provide support, information, and advocacy to domestic violence/sexual assault victims involved in the criminal justice system
· Assist victims with obtaining emergency orders of protection, protective orders, or restraining orders
· Accompany victims to court proceedings and provide support for meetings with magistrates, law enforcement, commonwealth’s attorneys or other legal representation, in preparation for their appearance and/or testimony at criminal hearings.
· Meet with both Madeline’s House and community-based clients to develop action plans, obtainable goals and provide tips to witness testimony.
· Assist victims with Criminal Injuries Compensation information
· Assist victims with victim impact statements, affidavits, motions to amend, and all other relevant documentation
· Provide transportation for victims, as needed, to and from court proceedings
· Arrange childcare for victims during court proceedings
· Document all advocacy services provided in accordance with agency policies and confidentiality requirements
Hospital Accompaniment
· Respond to Centra Southside Community Hospital Emergency Room for accompaniment of sexual assault victims to provide immediate crisis support during Sexual Assault Forensic Exams/Sexual Assault Nurse Exams (SAFE/SANE) and other medical evaluations
· Provide victims with information/referrals for community resources
· Document all accompaniment services provided in accordance with agency policies and confidentiality requirements
· Participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours response to the Emergency Room for accompaniment
Education/Training
· Provide resources and referrals to, and work with, community partners to meet the needs of clients
· Conduct training to allied professionals and volunteers on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.
· Attend all staff meetings and complete all training related to job description/duties
· Attend Multi-Disciplinary Team & Sexual Assault Response Team (MDT/SART) meetings
· Assist with weekly evening support groups for victims and children on a rotational basis with the other full-time staff.
· Coordinate regular enrichment activities for children in the program
Outreach
· Coordinate, participate, and/or deliver community presentations on domestic violence and sexual assault awareness, and actively participate in program awareness/prevention events.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or related field. Must possess strong knowledge of the Virginia judicial system and local community resources. Experience working with a diverse, multicultural population is preferred and should be fluent in English; both verbal and written. Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Must possess knowledge of crisis intervention and family case management along with the complexities of dating, and both domestic and sexual violence. Must have knowledge of diversion and targeted prevention procedures. Must possess knowledge of the various community-based family service programs and activities in the area. Must have knowledge of conflict resolution strategies, as well as familiarity necessary to provide financial counseling, basic housing counseling, and counseling on other related subjects/techniques.
Must have knowledge of the use of personal computers and standard office software and have effective oral and written communication skills. The ability to accurately track and report data and maintain meticulous and up-to-date case files is a requirement. Must possess the ability to accurately assess situations within the scope of responsibilities and make sound judgements with regard to existing laws, policies and regulations. Must have and maintain the ability to establish working relationships with parents (clients), children, co-workers, and representatives from outside agencies and programs and must be able to provide guidance to other team members.
Must possess the ability to plan daily activities and achieve identified goals. Must be able to change routine in a positive manner, independently solve problems as they arise, maintain consistent stable work behaviors, adequate individual coping skills, maintain dependability through punctuality and reliability, participate in decision making, respond appropriately to emergency situations, and exercise good judgement in an effort to maintain a safe work environment.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record and must be authorized for coverage under agency insurance if operating agency vehicle and/or required level of personal auto insurance. Must pass pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check.
