Overview:
CalAmp builds the connected intelligence behind how the world tracks, monitors, and recovers the assets that matter — from commercial fleets to high-value cargo, in real time, at scale. As a Software Engineer III on our backend team, you won't be maintaining a legacy monolith — you'll be designing and operating the distributed services that process high volume and live data from hundreds of thousands of connected devices.
If you like solving real concurrency, scale, and reliability problems — not just CRUD APIs — this is that kind of role. We invest in engineers who bring value: strong performers on this team have real room to grow into more senior scope.
This role is based in Carlsbad, CA, with a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities:
What You'll Do
Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that are reliable, observable, and built to scale- Own features end-to-end: from design discussions through deployment and post-launch monitoring
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in distributed, production systems — including on-call/incident response rotations
- Identify performance bottlenecks and drive measurable improvements in latency, throughput, and reliability
- Shape technical decisions through architecture reviews and code reviews with architects and senior engineers
- Partner directly with product and business teams to turn requirements into technical designs
- Help evolve our engineering practices — tooling, observability, CI/CD — as we modernize our stack
Qualifications:
What You Need (Must Haves)
4–7 years of professional backend software engineering experience in production environments- Strong CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis
- Deep proficiency in Java, including experience with RESTful and event-driven microservices
- Hands-on experience designing and operating distributed, scalable services in production
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, and with AWS core services (EC2/Lambda, S3, messaging)
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes
- Demonstrated experience debugging and supporting live production systems (monitoring, incident response, root-cause analysis)
- Strong written and verbal communication — you can explain tradeoffs to both engineers and non-engineers
Nice to Have
Not required — don't let this list stop you from applying.
Experience with Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming/event platforms- Docker, Helm, or serverless experience
- Java Reactive Programming, MongoDB
- Experience with Bitbucket Pipelines or similar CI/CD tooling
- Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
A note on the above: we don't expect any one candidate to check every box in this section. If you meet the must-haves and are excited about the role, we want to hear from you — these are a plus, not a gate.
What Success Looks Like In This Role
- You've independently shipped backend services to production and supported them after launch
- You're comfortable diagnosing issues across service boundaries in a distributed system
- You can take a feature from design through deployment and monitoring with minimal hand-holding
Please note: We're unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time — applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis.
