Position Summary
The Convenience Center Worker (As-Needed Floater) performs a variety of duties associated with the operation of county convenience centers and solid waste collection sites. This position serves as a substitute employee to provide coverage during employee absences, vacations, training, sick leave, staffing shortages, and emergency situations. The employee may be assigned to any county convenience center as needed and is not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide coverage at county convenience centers on an as-needed basis.
- Open and close convenience centers according to established procedures.
- Assist residents with proper disposal of household waste, recyclables, and approved materials.
- Monitor incoming loads to ensure compliance with county regulations and site policies.
- Identify and report prohibited, hazardous, or unauthorized materials.
- Maintain cleanliness of the convenience center, including litter pickup and general housekeeping.
- Clean around dumpsters, compactors, recycling containers, and grounds.
- Monitor container capacities and notify supervisors when service is needed.
- Direct traffic and assist customers in a safe and courteous manner.
- Complete required logs, reports, and documentation.
- Follow all county safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report accidents, injuries, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns immediately.
- Assist with storm debris operations and emergency response activities when assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Georgia driver's license required.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to interact professionally with the public.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Experience in solid waste, sanitation, public works, or customer service is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of proper waste disposal and recycling procedures.
- Ability to identify prohibited materials and safety hazards.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to work at multiple locations throughout Stephens County.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and climb for extended periods.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to safely work around vehicle traffic, waste containers, and heavy equipment.
Work Schedule
This is an as-needed, temporary, part-time position. Work hours will vary based on operational needs. Employees may be scheduled weekdays, weekends, holidays, or during emergency operations. No guarantee of minimum hours is provided.
Working Conditions
- Primarily outdoor work environment.
- Exposure to dust, odors, insects, weather conditions, and waste materials.
- May be required to work at any county convenience center location.
- Subject to emergency call-outs during storms, natural disasters, or other county emergencies.
