The Portage County Engineer is accepting applications from persons interested in the full-time position of Mechanic I.
The selected candidate is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment, and for providing building maintenance as needed as well as other duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performing preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
- Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions;
- Performing complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs;
- Performing general maintenance on work facilities;
- Diagnosing, repairing, test driving vehicles and equipment when needed.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs related Essential and Non-Essential functions as needed.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Equipment: Ability to use the following equipment: tracked and rubber-tired hydraulic excavators, rubber-tired telescopic boom excavator, grader, berm box, paver, backhoe, bulldozer, tar distributor, tractor trailer, tractor equipment mover, chipper box, pavement striper, paving and heavy-duty patch rollers, and/or other medium and heavy motorized equipment.
Critical Skills/Expertise:
- Knowledge of electrical procedures;
- Knowledge of automotive systems;
- Ability to work at other than regular hours and upon short notice.
Job Standards: Related training and 0 to 2 years related work experience is required. Must have a valid State of Ohio drivers license. Mechanic is required to have their own toolbox along with tools for the job.
II. RESPONSIBILITY
Work consists of varied, moderately complex tasks, following established rules and procedures. Supervisor provides general direction in following established practices and clear-cut policies. Errors in work may be detected in the normal course of work, or may cause delays in work or losses in expenditures for materials and/or equipment or unjustified work time.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical
Requirements: Incumbent performs heavy work which may require lifting more than fifty (50) pounds frequently.
Physical Activity: Incumbent performs the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work in which the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach. Operating trucks and other heavy equipment is required.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbent works inside with some outside work and is exposed to some temperatures that range from below 32 degrees to above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Incumbent is frequently exposed to noise, vibrations, atmospheric conditions, oil, and various other hazards.
