Position SummaryThe Medical Laboratory Technician performs routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests to provide data for use in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Working under the supervision of the Medical Laboratory Scientist or Lab Manager, this role operates automated equipment, conducts manual tests, and ensures the highest level of accuracy and quality control in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesSpecimen Processing & Testing
- Collect, label, and process biological specimens including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids.
- Perform routine and automated tests in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology.
- Prepare slides, solutions, and reagents necessary for testing protocols.
Equipment & Lab Maintenance
- Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot automated laboratory equipment and computerized systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance on instruments and document findings in equipment logs.
- Maintain a sterile, clean, and organized workspace to prevent cross-contamination.
Quality Control & Reporting
- Run standard controls and implement corrective action when quality thresholds are not met.
- Record, verify, and input critical test data into the hospital’s Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Identify and immediately escalate critical or panic values to physicians and nursing staff.
Compliance & Safety
- Adhere strictly to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and hospital safety regulations regarding biohazardous materials.
- Protect patient confidentiality by maintaining secure handling of health records.
- Participate in external proficiency testing to maintain laboratory accreditation.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related life science field.
- Certification: Active certification as an MLT by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
- Licensure: Valid state laboratory technician license (if required by state law).
- Technical Skills: Experience operating complex laboratory hardware and navigating electronic medical records (EMR) like Epic or Cerner.
- Core Competencies: Extreme attention to detail, strong manual dexterity, and the ability to work under pressure.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Manual dexterity to handle delicate instruments, pipettes, and needles.
- Capability to lift lab supply boxes up to 25 pounds.
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
