The Work
You’ll be responsible for both hospitality and drink execution.
That means:
- Greeting guests with warmth and professionalism
- Helping customers navigate our coffee and retail offerings
- Dialing in espresso daily and maintaining quality
- Executing our full beverage menu — including seasonal specials
- Steaming milk with proper texture and consistency
- Brewing drip coffee, teas, and cold brew to spec
You’ll also support the café’s daily systems:
- Clean and maintain espresso equipment
- Restock retail and paper goods
- Wash dishes and reset your station
- Process payments accurately
- Follow opening and closing procedures
The Details:
Assistant Barista Role:
The most important responsibility of the Assistant Barista is to wait on customers and provide a friendly, positive, and respectful environment. The assistant barista is the first face that the customer will see upon entering, so it’s important to provide service with a smile, and convey information about our products in an informative yet non-intimidating manner. Constant coordination, and communication with other assistant baristas, baristas, team leaders and managers is key to the operation of the floor. Your ability to follow checklists and all training / onboarding materials provided by your café manager is essential to your success in this role.
Barista Role:
Once all of the tasks aforementioned in the assistant job description have been mastered, a Snowy Owl Coffee employee will have the opportunity to begin bar training to become a Barista. Expectations of the Barista’s role is to adequately, and independently be able to perform all assistant and barista duties. In addition to performing the tasks of an assistant, the barista must be able to properly and consistently make espresso drinks.
First and foremost, the Barista should know how to properly dial in the espresso as well as how to always obtain the right consistency of steamed milk. The Barista should have thorough knowledge of extraction theory and bar basic etiquette. The Barista should be dialing in espresso at the beginning, and continuously throughout each shift. The Barista should be aware of the flavor notes that we are aspiring for with each type of espresso served including blends, and single origins.
Milk consistency per type of drink served is decided by Café Manager and Quality Control Manager. The barista is required to know the correct ratios of each espresso + milk drink and be able to precisely execute the preparation of our full drink menu, including specials. It is important to follow the direction of management and materials provided on how to make each new special or coffee offerings when implemented. Milk pitchers and Gibraltars must be thoroughly rinsed after each drink is made. Every single drink must be prepared to training standards set and implemented by Management/Quality Control.
Each drink should be composed with a clean pitcher. Milk must never be re-steamed and/or left unattended at the steam wand.
The Barista must keep a clean, tidy workspace at all times, and clean espresso machine/equipment, as it is imperative to quality service. Allergy protocols set forth by Management/Quality Control must be followed.
If a drink has been prepared but it is not up to the standards set forth by Quality Control or the Café Manager, do not serve it. Always remake it.
