Ronald McDonald House Albany provides a safe, comfortable, and supportive place for families with children receiving medical care. The Facilities & Maintenance Specialist plays a hands-on role in ensuring our House and grounds remain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming every day.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will handle preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, and vendor coordination across our Albany property and, occasionally, the Ronald McDonald House Family Retreat in Lake George. You will perform a wide range of hands-on work—from basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and furniture assembly to landscaping support and seasonal snow removal—while partnering closely with the housekeeping team and staff to keep the environment at its best for guest families, volunteers, and team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of buildings and grounds (painting touch-ups, basic carpentry, floor care, exterior work, and more).
- Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs for building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and appliances.
- Conduct regular facility inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and opportunities for improvement; resolve issues promptly.
- Obtain quotes, schedule services, and assist with vendor selection and oversight for skilled maintenance, repairs, and capital projects (in coordination with the Director of Operations).
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, warranties, service agreements, and equipment inventories.
- Monitor supplies, tools, and equipment; coordinate ordering and restocking as needed.
- Respond to emergency facility situations, including occasional after-hours issues.
- Support snow removal, landscaping coordination, and seasonal preparations (operation of lawn equipment and snow blower; shoveling and ice melt application). Note: A contracted company handles the majority of plowing and snow removal.
- Assist with setup, breakdown, and preparation for special events.
- Work alongside volunteer groups on facilities-related projects such as landscaping, painting, cleaning, organizing, and furniture assembly or moving.
- Partner with staff to address facility needs that enhance the comfort, safety, and experience of guest families.
- Recommend and implement improvements that support operational efficiency, sustainability, and the overall condition of the facility.
- Assist with cleaning/disinfecting and emptying of garbage and recycling as needed.
- Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.
What We Are Looking For
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of relevant maintenance experience
- Valid New York State driver’s license and excellent driving record
- Reliable transportation and ability to work Monday–Friday, with occasional weekend hours during the winter season
Critical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong eye for safety and maintenance issues
- Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other building systems
- Familiarity with lawn equipment, snow blowers, and power tools
- Ability to perform repetitive arm and wrist movements and work safely on ladders/step ladders
- Manual dexterity, coordination, and good balance
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, carry, walk, stoop, climb, and lift (up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 140 pounds with assistance) for the majority of the shift
- High mental alertness, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and comfort engaging with families, volunteers, staff, and vendors in a professional, compassionate, and patient manner
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to handle requests and concerns with professionalism

This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
