Construction Estimator
The Construction Estimator is a critical position at Word + Carr Design Group. This position is responsible for
evaluating bid specifications and drawings to develop accurate estimates, gathering information and analyzing key
metrics to produce conceptual pricing, construction bids, change orders, and schedules. Drawings may be
prepared in-house or by outside firms. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.
We're looking for someone who’s detail-oriented, has a strong grasp of construction costs and materials, and can
move fluidly between field conditions and desk work. The ideal candidate brings experience in landscape
construction or a related trade, communicates clearly with both crews and clients, and takes ownership of accuracy
under deadline pressure. Responsibilities include:
- Analyze and interpret Landscape architectural drawings and documents to determine scope of work.
- Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time, materials, and labor expenses.
- Obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors by specifying materials and scope of work, identifying
qualified subcontractors, and negotiating price.
- Collaborate with designers, clients, contractors and subcontractors on estimates.
- Perform material takeoffs and identify any gaps in the scope of work.
- Confirm field measurements and spot elevations against CD set as necessary
- Call in a dig test to have utilities marked prior to construction.
- Understand and evaluate project risk and schedule sensitivities.
- Build and maintain Gantt charts for each project.
- Assist with a variety of other responsibilities, both in the office and in the field:
- Subcontractor relationships
- Client and Designer Relationships
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Attend on-site preconstruction meetings and take notes for the team.
Education & Qualification Requirements
Degree in construction or engineering and 3 to 5 years of construction estimating experience are preferred.
Physical Requirements and Schedule
Ability to navigate construction sites, including walking, stooping and lifting up to 40lbs. Proficiency in computer use
for extended periods of time. Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as dictated by project deadlines.
