Job Title: Medical Assistant
Description: At Wexford Cardiology, the Medical Assistant provides a welcoming setting for the patients, as they accompany each patient to their exam room and perform other selective medical services under the direction of the cardiologist and physician assistant.
Working Conditions:
- This job requires full range of body motion. This includes handling/assisting patients.
- The days may consist of standing and/or walking for extensive periods of time.
- It is pertinent that one is able to multi-task and able to work well under stress.
- Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation, due to cardiac stress testing that involves nuclear isotope imaging—responsible for escorting these patients to their exam rooms post stress test.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Maintains treatment areas so that they are promptly ready for the next patient.
- Accompanies cardiologist’s patients to their assigned exam rooms in a timely and professional manner, all while being cognizant to maintain patient flow.
- Measures and documents patients’ height, weight, blood pressure and heart rate.
- Assists patients, as needed, from waiting room to exam room and onto exam table or chair.
- Reviews and documents patient’s medication list, medical history, and any new/worsening symptoms.
- Performs EKG’s, blood pressures and places Holter monitors on patients.
- Performs ancillary services and testing that may fall within the realm of their expertise as directed.
- Obtains lab reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
- Sends/receives patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
- Assists in restocking exam/procedure rooms—reporting supply needs promptly to cardiologist/practice manager.
- Assists receptionist with answering the office phones, while addressing what is being requested appropriately.
- Helps maintain tidiness of waiting area and any other front office responsibilities, as required.
- Is flexible to cross-train to cover related positions as required.
Performance Requirements:
- Knowledge of the principles and skills needed for coordinating, assisting with, and providing patient care.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Familiarity with medications and their effects on patients.
- Skill in taking vital signs—must demonstrate skill in maintaining records following documentation guidelines.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions.
- Possess organizational and communication skills—ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, patients and the general public.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and work well both individually and as part of a team.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Medical Assistant, CMA or RMA is strongly preferred.
- 1-2 years of recent experience in a medical office in a similar capacity is preferred.
- Current on all state certifications, licenses and/or registrations to continue employment.
- Understand cardiac terminology and medications.
- Proficiency with computers.
