Position Overview

Compensation: Grade 11 of the ESP Salary Scale ($25.66 - $46.41)

Schedule: 7.5 Hours/Day

Minimum Requirements:
-
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
-
Experience: Three (3) years of satisfactory experience in school safety, security services, law enforcement, military service, emergency services, corrections, the Department of Juvenile Services, juvenile case management, or a juvenile services related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student records, employee records, and personnel matters.

Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, law enforcement agencies, and community partners.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond appropriately in emergency and crisis situations.

Ability to safely intervene when necessary to prevent injury to students, staff, or visitors and maintain a safe environment.

Working knowledge of security procedures, emergency response protocols, and incident documentation practices.

Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and database management programs.

Ability to patrol school property, monitor activities, and identify potential safety or security concerns.
-
Ability to complete and maintain required training and certifications related to school safety, emergency preparedness, and crisis response.
-
Ability to adjust work hours on an irregular basis based on operational needs, including working evenings, weekends, and school-sponsored activities.

Successfully complete the FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) 100 training within 30 days in this position.

Ability to obtain Maryland Center for School Safety Security Position training within one (1) year in this position.

Attendance: Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of behavior management, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
-
FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, and 700 certifications.
-
Experience working in a school setting.
-
Experience conducting safety and security assessments or investigations.
Role Responsibilities:
-
Conduct regular patrols and safety checks of hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, parking lots, athletic fields, and other areas of the school building and grounds.
-
Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment by addressing safety concerns and supporting student compliance with school rules and expectations.
-
Utilize conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to assist in resolving students disputes and disruptive behavior.
-
Confer with students exhibiting inappropriate behavior to encourage compliance with school rules and procedures.
-
Monitor building conditions and safety practices that may impact the security of students, staff, and visitors.
-
Support visitor management procedures and initiate contact with individuals who have not appropriately checked in through established protocols.
-
Monitor class transitions and high-traffic areas of the campus.
-
Monitor camera systems and radio communications.
-
Maintain accurate records and documentation of safety and security incidents.
-
Report safety concerns, suspicious activity, and unusual incidents to school administration and the School Resource Officer.

Assist with emergency preparedness activities, including fire drills, evacuation drills, lockdown drills, and other safety exercises.
-
Assist School Resource Officers and administrators with safety and security training activities.
-
Work additional hours, as assigned, to support athletic events, extracurricular activities, and other school functions.
