About the Jaeb Center for Health Research
The Jaeb Center for Health Research (JCHR) is a nonprofit clinical research coordinating center with a 30+ year track record designing and conducting large-scale, multicenter clinical trials and observational studies. Our work addresses major public health challenges, with particular depth in diabetes, ophthalmology, and related chronic disease areas. We partner with leading academic investigators, NIH institutes, non-profit foundations, and industry sponsors—and our studies have shaped clinical practice guidelines across multiple specialties.
JCHR offers a collaborative, scientifically rigorous environment, experienced multidisciplinary teams, and an active portfolio of grant and sponsor-funded research.
Role Overview
JCHR is seeking a PhD-level Biostatistician or Epidemiologist to join our clinical research team. Successful candidates must fit one of the following two career pathways:
- For senior candidates with an established grant funding record (NIH or similar), this is a principal investigator-level role with immediate independence, leadership over study design and execution, and the expectation of sustaining and growing an externally funded research portfolio.
- For high-potential emerging researchers early in their career, this is a structured development opportunity—with mentorship, progressive responsibility, and a 2–3 year pathway toward independent grant funding and study leadership.
In either case, the long-term goal is the same: a researcher who leads multicenter clinical studies from conception through publication, secures external funding, and contributes meaningfully to JCHR’s scientific mission.
Applicants should carefully review the two pathways below and apply only if they meet the qualifications for one of them.
Two Pathways to This Role
Path A: Senior Investigator Track
For candidates with a demonstrated record of NIH or other external grant funding, or comparable independent research leadership experience. Successful candidates should have demonstrated scientific leadership, including experience securing external funding and leading multicenter clinical research.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on grant-funded or industry-sponsored multicenter studies
- Lead study design, protocol development, statistical analysis planning, and scientific reporting from inception through publication
- Develop and submit competitive grant applications
- Provide scientific leadership and mentorship to junior staff and early-career researchers
- Represent JCHR in sponsor, investigator, and regulatory interactions
Path B: Developing Investigator Track
For early-career investigators (typically within 3–5 years of completing a PhD) who already have meaningful clinical research experience and are committed to developing into independent investigators.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as statistician on assigned multicenter studies
- Collaborate with senior investigators on study design, analysis planning, and interpretation of results
- Develop statistical analysis plans and contribute to protocols, manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations
- Design and execute statistical analyses using SAS and other statistical software
- Participate in grant development activities in a supporting role, with progressive lead authorship on grant applications as skills develop
- Participate in structured mentorship with the expectation of progressively assuming leadership in grant development and externally funded research.
Core Responsibilities
The following responsibilities apply to both pathways:
- Develop statistical analysis plans aligned with study objectives and regulatory expectations
- Contribute to scientific publications, abstracts, and presentations across multiple studies
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams including investigators, coordinators, data managers, and regulatory staff
- Participate in investigator meetings and external scientific collaborations
- Contribute to protocol development and study design in collaboration with lead investigators
Qualifications
Required for Both Pathways
- PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or a closely related quantitative field
- Experience in clinical trials, observational research, or applied health research
- This position requires prior experience contributing to collaborative clinical research beyond coursework or dissertation research alone.
- Demonstrated scientific writing ability (manuscripts, protocols, or grant contributions)
- Evidence of peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, protocol development, or competitive grant participation is strongly preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a collaborative, remote environment
Path A — Additional Requirements
- Active or prior grant funding as PI or MPI
- Demonstrated independent study leadership from design through dissemination
- Track record of competitive grant submissions and scientific productivity
Path B — Additional Qualifications
- Strong statistical programming skills (SAS preferred)
- Foundational experience in clinical or public health research (typically 3–5 years post-PhD)
- Evidence of scientific productivity: publications, presentations, or contributions to grant-funded research
- Genuine interest in and commitment to developing toward independent research leadership and NIH funding
This is a fully remote, work-from-home position; relocation to the Tampa Bay area is not required.
Candidates should submit a cover letter describing their research interests, relevant clinical research experience, and identifying the career pathway (Path A or Path B) for which they are applying, including a brief explanation of how their background aligns with that pathway. A current curriculum vitae and completed employment application should also be submitted to [email protected].
