The Mission
In support of the mission and vision set forth by the congregation, the Director of Family and Youth will:
Guide, direct and implement the faith formation programs at Horace Lutheran for children ages 3 through Grade 12 and their families with a strong emphasis on encouraging and supporting the participation in the life of the Horace Lutheran Community.
Job Specifications
Essential:
- Shepherd the Family and Youth ministries at Horace Lutheran Church
- Recruit, equip, and empower Church School teachers and volunteers, Confirmation Guides, and Youth Group Leaders.
- Oversee and be present at operation of Church School and Confirmation sessions (currently 9:35-10:25am Sundays and 6-6:50pm Wednesdays of the program year [Sept-May]) and Senior High Youth sessions (currently 7:40-8:40 each Wednesday)
- Oversee and be present for a 1-week summer Vacation Bible School program
- Build relationships with students and their families to encourage spiritual growth and participation
- Communicate with parents/significant adults of students
- Work with the education committee to choose curriculum and plan events
- Seek input from the Horace Lutheran community for future adjustments
- Attend weekly staff meetings and regularly scheduled education meetings
- Create and execute weekly and monthly electronic communications.
- Contribute to HLC’s social media presence
- Other duties as assigned
Skills And Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Background Check
- 2 or more years working with children and youth
- Valid driver’s license
- Vibrant faith and a desire to support faith development in children
- Prompt and dependable attendance
Preferred Qualifications/Core Competencies
- Proficiency in computers and Microsoft Office software, and a high aptitude for learning church member management software. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Canva.)
- Respond to calls and e-mails from families always representing the church in a positive and joyful way.
- Demonstrated experience working with children and parents
- Demonstrated experience with attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
- Professionalism and integrity on the job and in daily life
- Patience, flexibility and a high capacity for joy, fun, and fellowship
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
- Experience with classroom management and curriculum
Skill development expectations:
- Stay familiar with and supportive of the ministries and mission of HLC
- Take advantage of continuing education opportunities offered in the area of
Family and Youth Ministry
Physical Requirements:
- Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, standing, stooping, standing and stretching
- Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts
- Requires the ability to lift 30 lbs
Accountability and Reporting
The Director of Family and Youth will:
- Report directly to the Senior Pastor.
- Be subject to a background check, participate in a 30 and 90 day review the first year, and an annual review thereafter to assess the Coordinator’s effectiveness in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.
- Attend all appropriate meetings, retreats, and other team-building events for the congregational staff as determined by the clergy.
- Conduct herself/himself in a manner supportive to the whole staff.
Horace Lutheran Church’s Commitment
In consideration of the duties to be performed in the section above, Horace Lutheran Church shall provide the following:
- Pastoral and lay guidance and help as needed
- Travel reimbursement and registration fees for all family and youth director events approved by the education and youth committee, including any state, regional, or international events.

- Support via the Education and Youth Committees and volunteers to help organize youth activities.
- Two weeks paid vacation each year with additional time earned with each year served.
- Encouragement to do continuing education and financial support in consultation with the pastor(s) and Executive Committee.
- Benefits package (insurance, etc.) yet to be determined.
Pay: $48,000.00 - $52,000.00 per year
