POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming facilities for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis (BGCSTL) members, families, employees, volunteers, and visitors. This position performs routine custodial cleaning, facility maintenance, and grounds keeping duties to ensure Club facilities, program spaces, offices, restrooms, common areas, and exterior grounds are properly maintained and meet BGCSTL standards for cleanliness, safety, sanitation, and appearance.
The Custodian plays an important role in supporting a safe and positive environment where young people can learn, grow, and thrive. The position requires reliability, attention to detail, professionalism, and a commitment to maintaining facilities that support the mission and daily operations of BGCSTL.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Custodial and Cleaning Services

Clean, sanitize, and maintain restrooms, including toilets, sinks, fixtures, mirrors, floors, and other surfaces.

Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, polish, buff, and vacuum floors using appropriate cleaning equipment and industrial vacuum cleaners.

Empty, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recycling materials.

Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces and frequently used areas.

Dust and clean furniture, fixtures, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, and other interior surfaces.

Clean and polish fixtures and other building surfaces as appropriate.

Clean interior and exterior windows using appropriate tools and equipment.

Remove stains from carpets, rugs, drapes, walls, floors, and other surfaces using appropriate cleaning products and methods.

Maintain cleanliness of offices, classrooms, activity rooms, gyms, common areas, storage areas, and other Club spaces.

Maintain and properly store custodial supplies, equipment, and materials.

Ensure assigned areas are clean, orderly, and ready for daily Club programming and activities.
Facility Maintenance and Support

Promptly report faulty operations, defective materials, safety hazards, facility damage, and other unusual conditions to the appropriate supervisor.

Assist with facility setup and breakdown for meetings, programs, special events, and organizational activities.

Move cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates, equipment, and other items as needed to clean areas, prepare spaces, or assist with office and facility moves.

Use ladders and other appropriate equipment safely when performing cleaning and duties.

Follow established procedures for the safe use, storage, labeling, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and other custodial materials.

Assist with other routine facility maintenance duties as assigned.
Grounds and Exterior Maintenance

Maintain exterior walkways, entrances, and surrounding areas by sweeping debris, raking leaves, removing litter, and washing walkways as needed.

Perform seasonal tasks, including snow and ice removal and other weather-related duties, as assigned.

Assist with basic landscape maintenance, including watering, trimming, and maintaining flowers, shrubs, grass, and other landscaped areas.

Remove debris and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe appearance around Club facilities and grounds.

Report exterior maintenance concerns, including damaged sidewalks, lighting, fencing, landscaping, or other safety hazards.
Inventory and Supplies

Monitor custodial and facility supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
-
Track usage of cleaning and maintenance supplies and notify the appropriate supervisor when supplies need to be reordered.

Assist with receiving, organizing, and properly storing custodial and maintenance supplies.

Use organizational resources responsibly and minimize unnecessary waste of supplies and materials.
Safety, Compliance, and Child Protection

Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work areas in accordance with BGCSTL policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Follow all applicable health, sanitation, safety, and environmental requirements.

Use personal protective equipment and appropriate safety practices when performing assigned duties.

Maintain awareness of youth, staff, volunteers, and visitors while working in Club facilities and immediately report safety concerns or hazardous conditions.

Support BGCSTL's commitment to providing a safe environment for children and youth by following all child safety policies and procedures.

Complete required child safety, abuse prevention, and other organizational training within established timelines.

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with Club members and youth and follow all BGCSTL policies regarding interactions with children and youth.

Promptly report any suspected child abuse, neglect, or safety concerns in accordance with applicable law and BGCSTL policies and procedures.

Protect the confidentiality and privacy of organizational, employee, member, and family information encountered during the performance of job duties.
General Responsibilities

Maintain a professional, dependable, and service-oriented approach when interacting with employees, Club members, families, volunteers, vendors, and visitors.

Report facility concerns and maintenance needs in a timely manner.

Work cooperatively with Club staff and other departments to support daily operations and special events.

Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality consistent with the needs of the Club and assigned work schedule.

Work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or special events, as required by Club operations.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
-
High school diploma or GED preferred.
-
Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, or maintenance experience preferred.

Ability to safely operate custodial equipment, including industrial vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, and other related equipment.

Working knowledge of basic cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and the safe handling of cleaning chemicals.

Ability to identify and report facility hazards, maintenance concerns, and unsafe conditions.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established safety procedures.

Ability to work independently and manage assigned responsibilities with limited supervision.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, members, families, volunteers, vendors, and visitors.

Basic computer skills, including the ability to use email and an electronic timekeeping system.

Ability to work flexible hours based on Club and facility needs.

Must successfully complete a criminal background check and any other required screening consistent with BGCSTL policies and applicable law.

Must successfully complete required abuse prevention, child safety, and other organizational training upon hire and as required thereafter.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Frequently balance, climb, reach, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, and perform other physical movements necessary to complete custodial and facility maintenance duties.

Stand, walk, push, pull, lift, carry, grasp, and perform repetitive physical activities for extended periods.

Safely operate and maneuver custodial equipment and tools.

Work at heights using ladders or other approved equipment when necessary.

Work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to varying temperatures and weather conditions.

May be exposed to noise levels sufficient to require the employee to raise their voice to communicate with others.

May be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, and other substances commonly associated with custodial and facility maintenance work and must follow appropriate safety procedures.
