Process Vacuum Engineer – Applications & Technical Sales NES Company Inc. | Full-Time | New Jersey (in-territory travel required) | Reports to the General Manager
About NES Company Inc. NES Company Inc. engineers industrial vacuum solutions — liquid ring vacuum pumps and compressors, dry screw and rotary vane vacuum pumps, dry claw pumps, vacuum boosters, ejectors, eductors, and complete hybrid vacuum systems. We serve the chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, power generation, paper, mining, medical, wastewater, and general industrial markets, working closely with customers on reliable, energy-efficient solutions for new installations and system upgrades.
Position Overview We're hiring a Process Vacuum Engineer – Applications & Technical Sales to support the design, selection, sizing, quotation, and optimization of industrial vacuum systems. This customer-facing role blends process/applications engineering with technical sales: you'll work directly with customers, distributors, sales reps, suppliers, and NES engineering to build technically sound, commercially competitive vacuum solutions. Strong candidates have hands-on experience with industrial vacuum equipment and a solid grasp of process conditions, equipment performance, system integration, and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Process & Applications Engineering
- Select, size, and specify vacuum equipment — liquid ring pumps/compressors, dry screw and rotary vane pumps, dry claw pumps, boosters, ejectors/eductors, hybrid systems, condensers, separators, heat exchangers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Review customer RFQs, process data, and operating conditions (gas composition, vapor load, pressures, temperature, capacity, seal-liquid needs, materials of construction) to perform sizing calculations and performance evaluations.
- Recommend equipment configurations, materials, sealing arrangements, instrumentation, and controls; develop and review PFDs, P&IDs, layouts, and specs.
- Troubleshoot, optimize, and debottleneck existing vacuum systems; support proprietary sizing methods and engineering standards.
Technical Sales & Proposal Development
- Understand customer processes, challenges, and commercial objectives; prepare technical and commercial proposals for pumps, replacement equipment, systems, and spare parts.
- Support the sales team and distribution network on equipment selection, application review, pricing, and technical presentations.
- Identify replacement opportunities for aging vacuum equipment, follow up on quotations, and build long-term customer relationships through responsive pre- and post-sale support.
Customer & Project Support
- Serve as technical liaison between customers, reps, suppliers, and internal engineering; join customer meetings, technical reviews, and site visits.
- Support startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance validation; guide customers on installation, operation, and maintenance.
Product & Market Support
- Support development of standardized and custom-engineered vacuum systems; help identify product gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Prepare technical literature, datasheets, and training materials; stay current on vacuum technology, energy efficiency, and environmental requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years in process engineering, applications engineering, technical sales, or industrial vacuum-system design.
- Direct, hands-on experience with several of: liquid ring vacuum pumps, dry screw vacuum pumps, rotary vane pumps, vacuum boosters, ejectors/eductors, hybrid vacuum systems, process condensers and separators.
- Solid understanding of vacuum-system performance and operating principles, and experience sizing/applying equipment to customer process conditions.
- Familiarity with surface and barometric condensers, knockout tanks, separators, heat exchangers, and seal-liquid systems.
- Ability to read and develop PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and technical specifications.
- Direct customer-facing experience in an applications engineering, technical sales, project engineering, or process-support role.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and willingness to travel for customer meetings, site visits, and commissioning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with customers in chemical/specialty chemical, pharma/biotech, food & beverage, oil & gas/refining, pulp & paper, power generation, mining, wastewater, or general industrial manufacturing.
- Experience with custom-engineered capital equipment and packaged vacuum systems, and preparing technical/commercial proposals.
- Experience replacing or upgrading legacy vacuum pumps and systems.
- Familiarity with vacuum-system instrumentation, controls, VFDs, and motor requirements; knowledge of industry testing standards and performance guarantees.
- Master's degree in Engineering or a related field.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting ability; converts customer process requirements into practical equipment solutions.
- Commercially aware, customer-focused engineering mindset; explains technical concepts clearly to nontechnical stakeholders.
- Effective proposal writing and technical presentation skills.
- Self-motivated and organized — manages multiple RFQs and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Collaborative across engineering, sales, operations, and manufacturing; strong sense of ownership and accountability.
What Success Looks Like You quickly understand customer applications, ask the right technical questions, select appropriate equipment, and build proposals that are both technically sound and commercially competitive — strengthening customer relationships, improving quote quality and turnaround, and growing NES's engineered vacuum systems business.
