Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Registered Charge Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care within Unity Health Care's Department of Corrections Health Center. The Charge Nurse serves as the clinical leader for nursing operations during assigned shifts, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, supporting nursing staff, maintaining continuity of services, and promoting compliance with clinical standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care at the Central Detention Facility (CDF), Central Treatment Facility (CTF), or other assigned correctional health locations.

Serve as the Charge Nurse, providing clinical leadership and supporting the management and development of nursing personnel.

Function as the senior nursing administrator on-site during the absence of the Director of Nursing and Nurse Manager, particularly on evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Promote continuity of nursing services and ensure compliance with the standards established by the DC Board of Nursing.

Assist the Nurse Manager with staff evaluations, coaching, and performance feedback.

Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff and provide guidance on clinical and administrative matters.

Support quality improvement initiatives and incorporate evidence-based nursing practices into patient care.

Oversee the Methadone Clinic/Opiate Treatment Program (OTP) at CDF, when assigned.

Ensure compliance with Unity Health Care policies, Department of Corrections regulations, and applicable nursing standards.

Perform additional duties as assigned to support patient care and operational needs.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (AAS, Diploma, or BSN).

Current Registered Nurse license or eligibility for licensure in Washington, DC.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in acute care (Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical) and/or ambulatory care.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience serving as a Charge Nurse.

Strong leadership, clinical decision-making, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced correctional healthcare environment.
