Accounting & Compliance Coordinator
About the Role
Bittel Books & Taxes is seeking an experienced Accounting & Compliance Coordinator to join our Accounting & Compliance Team while serving as a trusted financial advisor to our clients. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys accounting and tax work, thrives in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment, and wants to play a key role in helping small businesses grow.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting knowledge with the ability to analyze financial performance, proactively identify issues, and communicate meaningful insights to both clients and team members. This person will oversee bookkeeping quality, review financial statements, mentor team members, and serve as a trusted financial advisor by leading recurring Financial Advisory Meetings that help business owners understand their financial performance, identify opportunities, and make informed business decisions.
This is a coordinator role with significant autonomy, client interaction, leadership responsibility, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Oversight
- Review monthly and quarterly bookkeeping engagements completed in QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, and other online accounting platforms for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification.
- Analyze financial statements to identify trends, inconsistencies, cash flow concerns, and opportunities for operational improvement.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end close processes, reconciliations, and financial reporting for client accounts.
- Maintain the integrity of accounting systems and financial reporting processes.
- Apply both cash and accrual basis accounting principles as appropriate.
- Assist with cleanup and catch-up bookkeeping projects as needed.
- Oversee payroll compliance, sales tax filings, Forms 1099 and W-2 reporting, and other related compliance requirements.
- Support the Tax Team by ensuring client books are tax-ready and identifying potential tax issues and planning opportunities.
- Review financial reports to ensure clients receive accurate, timely, and actionable financial information.
Advisory & Client Management
- Serve as the primary accounting advisor and relationship manager for assigned clients.
- Lead recurring Financial Advisory Meetings (monthly, quarterly, or as appropriate) to review financial statements, business performance, key performance indicators, cash flow, profitability, budgeting, operational trends, and tax projections.
- Translate financial information into meaningful business insights that help clients understand the story behind their numbers.
- Help clients identify opportunities to improve profitability, strengthen cash flow, increase operational efficiency, and achieve their business goals.
- Prepare financial reports, meeting agendas, and presentation materials for advisory meetings.
- Collaborate closely with the Tax Team to ensure advisory meetings incorporate relevant tax planning opportunities, projections, and coordinated client recommendations.
- Communicate proactively with clients regarding deadlines, outstanding items, financial concerns, and recommended actions.
- Build and maintain long-term client relationships through responsiveness, professionalism, proactive communication, strategic financial guidance, and ongoing financial education.
- Participate in operational consulting and process improvement discussions with clients, as appropriate.
- Provide industry-specific training to clients on accounting platforms such as QBO, Xero, and/or Wave.
Team Leadership & Operations
- Coordinate, mentor, and supervise bookkeeping, accounting, and compliance staff.
- Review department work product and provide coaching, training, and constructive feedback.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings and support employee development.
- Coordinate internal workflow, delegation, and project management to ensure deadlines are met.
- Develop, document, and continuously improve internal procedures, workflows, and best practices.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and solutions-oriented team environment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that increase quality, efficiency, and consistency across the Accounting & Compliance Team.
- Partner with the Team Operations Director on staff utilization analysis, client billing, and implementation of process improvements.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, preferably in public accounting or Client Accounting Services (CAS).
- Strong QuickBooks Online experience required.
- Experience reviewing bookkeeping and financial statements for multiple clients.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Familiarity with payroll tax, sales tax, and year-end compliance reporting.
- Tax knowledge or experience working alongside tax preparation teams strongly preferred.
- Experience leading or participating in client advisory meetings preferred.
- Ability to explain financial information to non-accounting business owners in a clear, practical, and confident manner.
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable in a growing small-business environment.
- Ability to work remotely while maintaining accessibility during standard business hours (Monday–Friday).

Pay: From $52,040.43 per year
