Job Summary
The Ophthalmology Technician provides clinical, technical support to ophthalmologists by performing patient assessments, diagnostic testing, documentation, patient education, and clinical procedures. This position is responsible for preparing patients for examination, performing ophthalmic testing, assisting with treatments and minor procedures, coordinating patient care, and maintaining accurate medical records while promoting quality patient outcomes, exceptional customer service, and efficient clinic operations.
Essential Job Duties
- Obtains and documents patient medical and ocular histories, performs preliminary examinations, and completes ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including visual acuity, refractions, intraocular pressure, color vision, OCT, visual fields, fundus photography, pachymetry, Lenstar, topography, and other testing as ordered.
- Assists physicians with examinations, office procedures, treatments, and medication administration, including the instillation of ophthalmic medications, while preparing examination rooms, instruments, and equipment.
- Provides patient education regarding diagnostic testing, procedures, medications, treatment plans, surgical instructions, and follow-up care while addressing patient questions and communicating physician recommendations.
- Coordinates patient care by scheduling surgeries, diagnostic testing, imaging, laboratory services, referrals, and follow-up appointments while ensuring appropriate documentation and communication.
- Accurately documents patient assessments, testing results, procedures, physician encounters, and patient communications within the electronic medical record (EMR), including scribing as assigned.
- Maintains ophthalmic equipment, instruments, and clinical supplies; adheres to infection prevention, safety, and confidentiality standards; and performs additional clinical or administrative duties as assigned to support efficient clinic operations.

Required Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED required; Completion of an accredited ophthalmic technician or medical assistant program preferred.
Experience:
- Previous ophthalmology, optometry, medical assistant, or healthcare experience preferred.
- Experience performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing and assisting with patient examinations preferred.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and medical documentation preferred.
- Strong customer service and patient communication experience preferred.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or other ophthalmic certification preferred.

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
