We are currently hiring an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team!
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, approximately 40 hours per week position with core hours Mondays-Fridays, between the hours of 8am - 5pm. Hours are subject to variation based upon clinic needs.
Primary Objective:
The Ophthalmic Assistant provides clinical support to ensure the delivery of high quality, compassionate care to patients.
The essential functions for the position (include but not limited to):
- Greet and room patients
- Obtain and document past/present medical history in the EHR system
- Perform preliminary ophthalmic work-up, including Visual Assessment, Confrontational Visual Field Testing, Pupil -Assessment, Tonometry, Ocular Motility Testing, Automated and Manual Refractometry, Pachymetry, Basic Lensometry, Ishihara Testing, Stereo Testing, Amsler Grid, Schirmer Testing
- Perform visual field testing, fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), topography
- Assist the doctor with administering eye drops and irrigating solution as needed
- Prepare and/or collect laboratory specimens
- Call patients with results and/or scheduling
- Respond to patient questions and prescription refill requests via phone, fax, or EHR system
- Assist with scheduling radiology tests
- Maintain applicable workflow in the EHR system
- Perform clinical room turnover/set-up and equipment sterilization
- Maintain OSHA standards to ensure a sterilized and safe environment
- Predictable, reliable, and prompt attendance

Supervision:
The Ophthalmic Assistant reports to the Practice Manager(s) when applicable, with clinical oversight from the Provider.
Work Environment:
The Ophthalmic Assistant functions in a specialty clinic with high patient volume. This role may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, and therefore, may be required to wear personal protective equipment at times. This position routinely uses standard ophthalmic equipment as well as standard ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.

- Physical Demands – Frequently required to stand; walk; sit in front of a computer; type; perform repetitive mouse clicks; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or providers/staff. Occasionally assists with moving or positioning wheelchair bound patients, clinical equipment, and office supplies up to 50 pounds
- Mental Demands – Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, make quick decisions, thrive in fast-paced environment, and use discretion and sensitivity
Education and Experience:
- 1-3 years’ experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred but not required
- COA certification or greater is a plus
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Computer literacy
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Personable; empathetic with patient’s needs and concerns
- Well-organized with attention to detail
- Ability to work as a team member
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- The ability to seek instruction in areas where he/she is not knowledgeable
- The ability to recognize inconsistencies
