Animal Shelter Maintenance Technician

Job Summary:
The Animal Shelter Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. This position performs general building maintenance, janitorial duties, minor plumbing repairs, painting, and facility upkeep throughout the shelter campus. The ideal candidate is dependable, hands-on, and comfortable working in an animal care environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facility Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs throughout the shelter facility
- Complete minor plumbing repairs such as unclogging drains, repairing faucets, replacing toilets, and fixing leaks
- Perform painting, drywall patching, and touch-up work as needed
- Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, and basic fixtures
- Assist with preventive maintenance tasks and equipment upkeep
- Monitor facility conditions and report major repair needs
Janitorial Duties
- Maintain cleanliness of offices, hallways, break rooms, restrooms, adoption areas, and common spaces
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, sanitize, and remove trash throughout the facility
- Clean and disinfect surfaces using approved shelter cleaning protocols
- Restock cleaning and restroom supplies
- Help maintain odor control and sanitation standards
Grounds & Shelter Support
- Assist with outdoor maintenance including pressure washing, litter removal, and minor landscaping
- Support shelter setup for events, deliveries, or emergency situations
- Move supplies, donations, cages, furniture, and equipment as needed
- Maintain maintenance tools and supply inventory
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all shelter safety procedures and OSHA guidelines
- Use cleaning chemicals and maintenance equipment safely
- Maintain a safe environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and the public
- Report safety hazards promptly
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Minimum of two (2) years of maintenance, janitorial, handyman, or facility repair experience required
- Experience with painting and light plumbing repairs required
- Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and tools
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable working around animals, cleaning chemicals, noise, and odors
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
- Valid driver’s license required in good standing
Schedule Requirements:
- Must be available to work every other Saturday
- Must be available for on-call maintenance emergencies on Sundays during scheduled weekend rotation
- May require holidays or emergency response support depending on shelter needs
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
· The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, as well as move and traverse within the shelter facility for extended periods of time, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to communicate, converse with, convey information to, express oneself, and exchange information with shelter staff and the general public.
· The employee must regularly move, transport, and position items weighing up to 10 pounds, frequently moves, transports, and positions items weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally moves, transports, and positions items weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee is continuously exposed to animals, animal waste, potentially harmful cleaning chemicals, high noise and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites and working outdoors for extended periods of time during cold and extremely hot weather.
