General Responsibilities

Must be a strong leader by inspiring and motivating crew members to perform to their potential and strive to be a positive role model and promote company goals

Must be able to assess each crew member to ensure they are fit for duty each day prior to beginning work

Enforce safe work practices, client and public safety by following company policies and procedures

Understands all Company/Industry safety regulations and insists on 100% compliance

Understands the balance between production and safety

Provides support for daily/weekly toolbox topics and safety meetings

Conducts on-the-job training for employees, as needed

Manages time effectively to complete and submit weekly paperwork tasks, where applicable

Leads incident response efforts and promotes Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions exist

Represents the company professionally by ensuring both personal and crew conduct reflect positively on clients, potential clients, the public, and others observing work in the field. This includes maintaining personal and equipment cleanliness, preventing littering, minimizing profanity, and treating the public with courtesy and respect

Participate in daily crew meetings and share trending information, when applicable

Remain in the field and be available to the crews and supervisory personnel for the duration of the workday**

**The workday is defined as the period beginning when the crews report to work in the morning and ending when they return to and leave the staging yard at the end of the day. Workday schedules may vary based on location, seasonal conditions, emergency response needs, or planned overtime. Depending on the region or contract requirement, crews may operate on a four-day, 10-hour schedule or a five-day, 8-hour schedule.

Provide oversight of crew activities:
-
Observe crew activities and document the work performed – take notes, clear and informative photos that will facilitate the completion of a thorough observation report
-
Report all findings (any findings that need more discussion are to be relayed to the Safety Director)
-
Utilize Stop Work Authority anytime unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed until the work can be completed safely
-
Notify immediate supervisor of any Stop Work situations that arise
-
Complete observation reports in a timely manner
-
A minimum of two (2) observation reports are required to be completed per day
-
Safety Observation Reports are to be completed and submitted the same day they are performed
-
Give clear and concise reports of observed activities/behaviors
-
Inspect gear and equipment of all crews and be familiar with the manufacturer guidelines
-
Replace or recommend replacement of any items found to be defective (unsafe), expired or near expiration
-
Document and report on these findings and to whom the notifications were made
-
Assist with employee training, retraining or refresher training, as needed
-
Training may occur on-the-job, during tailboard sessions, or on a scheduled monthly, quarterly or yearly basis
Qualifications
-
A minimum of five years’ experience supporting or leading safety programs. This experience can be outside of utility work supporting or leading safety programs from other than utility or construction industries (i.e., experience in industries, trades, or businesses that have robust safety programs to protect workers and the public, and at a minimum must meet federal, state, and local regulations). The experience can also be from other than a dedicated safety professional background (e.g., journeyman, foreman, general foreman, instructors, personnel who are required to be knowledgeable of safety requirements and can recognize and mitigate workplace hazards, etc.)

A minimum of two years’ experience in the industry they are responsible for overseeing, supporting, and observing (i.e., for high voltage electrical work, Safety Professionals must have experience in the hazards and mitigation measures associated with this type of work).

Must possess a valid Drivers License and have at least 3 years of driving experience/pass a background and/or MVR check
-
Must be able to report fit-for-duty at requested time and location
-
Must pass company driving test and enter / exit a vehicle numerous times a day
-
Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen
-
Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR/BLS/AED certification
-
Must have strong leadership and organizational skills
-
Must have the knowledge and ability to assess each crew member for skill proficiency
-
Must ensure that each crew member is capable and qualified to safely perform the task they are being assigned with
-
Must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills – bilingual preferred
-
Must possess conflict resolution skills
-
Certified Tree Safety Professional (CTSP) preferred
-
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist preferred
Work Environment:
-
Outdoor environment in varying weather conditions; working around equipment and machinery; uneven ground depending on location; loud noise exposure; potential exposure to dust, gas, fumes, or chemicals.
