Position Summary
The Simulator Technician performs all tasks associated with routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, technical repairs, and hardware/software upgrades on full flight simulators (FFS) and flight simulation training devices (FSTD). This role ensures continuous device compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) qualification standards while providing top-tier technical support to training customers.
Essential Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting & Repair (40%): Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and software issues on flight simulators. Document all corrective maintenance actions accurately in the tracking system.
- Preventive Maintenance & Compliance (40%): Perform routine scheduled maintenance. Execute FAA Qualification Test Guides (QTGs) to ensure simulators remain fully qualified and perform according to design specifications.
- Upgrades & Regulatory Support (20%): Assist with hardware/software upgrades, new system installations, and regulatory inspections to maintain long-term FAA certification.
- Customer Service & Operational Support: Provide real-time technical assistance to clients during scheduled training. This includes, but is not limited to, cleaning simulator and simulator spaces and general building upkeep.
Work Schedule
- Must be available to support customer training schedules, which include shifts across days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Occasional travel may be required (up to 5% domestic and international).
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree in Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Systems, or a related technical field; OR a High School Diploma/GED plus equivalent practical experience.
- Note: Military training in avionics/electronics or direct FFS maintenance experience can substitute for the degree on a 1-for-1 year basis.
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience maintaining Full Flight Simulators (FFS) or Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTD).
- Technical Skills: Proven expertise in at least two of the following core systems:
- Computer hardware/software (Windows and UNIX)
- Visual alignment and database systems
- Motion and Control Loading Systems (CLS)
- Basic electrical/electronics (wiring, soldering, power supplies)
- Aviation cockpit and audio systems
- Communication: Full professional verbal and written proficiency in English.
- Authorization: Must be a US Person in accordance with 22 CFR § 120.62 (e.g. U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Thales flight simulators.
- Familiarity with Python programming and network administration.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, or Night Vision Goggles (NVG) configurations.
- Knowledge of and experience with using basic hand tools and test equipment.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
- Physical Tasks: Regularly required to stand for extended periods, sit, walk, squat, kneel, climb ladders, work at heights, and crawl into tight or confined spaces within the simulator structure.
- Lifting: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Sensory Skills: Acute vision required for color matching, visual database alignment, and reading engineering schematics. Ability to hear building alarms and simulator safety warnings.
- Safety & PPE: Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, or safety harnesses where applicable.
