Quality Control Weld Technician

The QC Weld Technician is responsible for performing visual, dimensional, and workmanship inspections of aluminum and steel weldments throughout the manufacturing process. The position verifies that welded components and assemblies conform to approved engineering drawings, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), established company quality standards, and applicable documented acceptance criteria.
This position does not require Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.

Essential Functions:

Perform visual inspection of aluminum and steel welds during production and at designated inspection points.

Assist with development and maintenance of visual weld acceptance standards using actual production examples.

Verify welds against approved engineering drawings, WPS requirements, work instructions, and established acceptance criteria.

Inspect fillet welds, groove welds, intermittent welds, and other weld configurations applicable to production.

Identify visible welding discontinuities and workmanship concerns.

Verify weld quality on both aluminum and carbon steel components and assemblies.

Identify distortion, twisting, bowing, or misalignment resulting from welding or fabrication.

Perform non-destructive testing.

Use and maintain inspection equipment.

Verify inspection equipment is within its required calibration or verification period before use.

Classify inspection findings according to established company standards as a “Pass, Rework/Repair or Hold for Review”.

Clearly document the location and nature of identified defects.

Communicate findings through weekly team meetings.

Re-inspect and verify that required repairs or rework have been completed.

Perform inspections at designated manufacturing hold points.

Perform routine production audits.

Identify repetitive weld quality issues and communicate trends to Quality and Production leadership.

Assist Production in identifying workmanship issues before they become repeated defects.

Record inspection results electronically.

Participate in root cause investigations as requested.

Participate in continuous improvement activities focused on reducing weld defects, rework, scrap, and warranty issues.

Ability to communicate quality concerns professionally with welders, supervisors, Engineering, and Quality personnel.

Ability to read engineering drawings and confirm parts are measured against blueprints.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education: High school diploma or GED. Associate degree preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years’ experience in quality control ; preferably in manufacturing. Working knowledge of welding and fabrication processes. Experience welding or quality control with aluminum preferred.
Computer Skills: Advanced
Certificates & Licenses: AWS Welding Certificate D1.1 and or D1.2

Other Physical Requirements: Employees must wear steel-toed boots, must wear protective eyewear, hearing protection, or any other protective equipment as required by the position. This position may work in outdoors during inclement weather and/or extreme heat.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an open building/outdoor setting, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and evening shifts. Work is often performed in an urgent manner with stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
