Position Overview
The Computer Science Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned computer science instruction that develops students' computational thinking, problem-solving, digital literacy, and programming skills. The ideal candidate believes all students can succeed in computer science, fosters creativity and innovation, values structured classroom routines, and creates an inclusive learning environment where students are encouraged to explore technology, collaborate, and apply their learning to real-world challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver rigorous, age-appropriate middle school computer science lessons aligned to state standards.
- Teach a range of computer science concepts, including coding, computational thinking, digital citizenship, problem-solving, and technology applications.
- Integrate real-world technology, emerging trends, and career connections into instruction to make learning relevant and engaging.
- Design hands-on projects that develop technical skills, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance.
Classroom Culture & Student Support
- Establish clear routines and expectations that promote a safe, inclusive, and engaging computer science learning environment.
- Build strong, positive relationships with students and families to foster a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and growth.
- Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate supports for diverse learners, including students with IEPs, MLLs, and students with varying levels of technical experience.
- Collaborate with special education teachers, deans, counselors, and other staff to support student behavior, engagement, and academic success.
Assessment & Feedback
- Assess student work using clear rubrics aligned to learning goals
- Provide timely, actionable feedback to support growth
- Maintain accurate grades, attendance, and documentation
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with grade-level teams and leadership
- Participate in professional development, coaching, and school-wide events
- Contribute to exhibitions, showcases, or school culture events
- Communicate regularly with families about student progress
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required (Computer Science, Education or related field preferred)
- New York State certification preferred or willingness to pursue certification
- Experience teaching middle school students strongly preferred
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Commitment to equity, high expectations, and continuous improvement
- Ability to engage and motivate diverse learners
Preferred
- Master’s degree in education or related field
- At least 2 years of middle school teaching experience
- Experience in urban or charter school environments
- Familiarity with data-driven instruction and literacy development
