Overview
The Town of Plainfield Recreation Department is seeking a motivated and experienced Aquatics Coordinator to support the Recreation Director and Assistant Director in the planning, development, management, and supervision of all aquatic programming.
This position plays a key role in ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality aquatic services for residents of all ages. Programs include swim lessons, recreational swimming, water fitness, and staff training.
The Aquatics Coordinator helps maintain a positive, inclusive, and safety-focused environment while supporting daily operations, staff supervision, regulatory compliance, and customer service excellence.
Essential Duties
- Oversee daily pool operations and aquatics staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, and water fitness instructors
- Provide performance feedback and support staff development as directed
- Coordinate aquatics staff schedules and fill staffing gaps as needed
- Support and implement quarterly in-service training and conditioning for aquatics staff
- Maintain attendance records and monitor program participation and payments
- Enforce safety procedures, risk management standards, and operational policies
- Conduct routine facility inspections and ensure the pool is ready for daily operations
- Instruct aquatic programs such as swim lessons and water aerobics
- Respond to emergency situations, provide emergency care when required, and notify management immediately
- Review incident and accident reports for accuracy and follow up as needed
- Assist with hiring, training, supervision, coaching, and discipline of aquatics staff
- Ensure all required certifications are current for self and staff compliance
- Maintain SDS (Safety Data Sheet) binder and ensure annual Bloodborne Pathogens training compliance
- Oversee birthday parties and pool rentals
- Use recreation management software (MyRec) to input programs, events, and registrations
- Assist with program marketing and outreach
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and professional work environment
- Maintain high standards of customer service and professional communication
- Work independently and as part of a team while demonstrating a positive attitude
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with special events for the pool and Recreation Department
- Support CPR/First Aid class planning and implementation
- Provide or support Bloodborne Pathogens training (American Red Cross preferred)
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Recreation Director
Minimum Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- Prior experience in staff supervision or team leadership required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Current American Red Cross certifications in:
- Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (Deep Water)
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Lifeguard Instructor (preferred or willingness to obtain)
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Reliable attendance and punctuality required
Physical & Working Conditions
- Work is performed in an indoor heated aquatic facility and Recreation Department office
- Must be able to remain alert at all times and respond to emergency signals
- Requires full visual and auditory awareness of pool and facility areas
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and physical activity required
- Must be able to work in and around water, including ability to assist in rescues when necessary
