New York City Muslim Center (NYCMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and home to the largest Islamic Center in New York City. Our 60,000 sq. ft. facility impacts over 2,000 people weekly and houses key institutions including:

We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and experienced Porter/Handyman who can help maintain the cleanliness, safety, appearance, and daily functionality of the facility.
This position is ideal for someone who is hands-on, notices problems before they become larger issues, and is comfortable completing both porter duties and basic repairs.
Key Responsibilities
Porter and Facility Duties
- Perform routine cleaning and upkeep of hallways, stairwells, entrances, classrooms, offices, restrooms, prayer areas, and common spaces
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and remove trash and recycling
- Clean and disinfect restrooms and refill soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and other supplies
- Maintain clean and presentable building entrances, sidewalks, and surrounding areas
- Respond promptly to spills, messes, and urgent cleaning needs
- Assist with snow removal, salting, and basic exterior upkeep when needed
- Move tables, chairs, equipment, deliveries, and facility supplies
- Set up and break down rooms for school programs, community events, meetings, and rentals
- Conduct routine walkthroughs to identify maintenance, cleanliness, and safety concerns
Handyman and Maintenance Duties
- Complete basic repairs throughout the facility
- Repair or adjust doors, locks, handles, hinges, cabinets, shelves, fixtures, and furniture
- Perform minor painting, patching, caulking, and wall repairs
- Replace lightbulbs, ceiling tiles, batteries, filters, and other basic facility items
- Assemble furniture, shelving, equipment, and other facility items
- Perform minor plumbing tasks, such as addressing simple clogs, leaks, faucets, and toilet issues
- Perform basic troubleshooting of facility equipment
- Assist outside contractors and vendors when they are working onsite
- Maintain tools, maintenance supplies, and storage areas in an organized manner
- Immediately report major electrical, plumbing, HVAC, structural, fire-safety, or security concerns to management
- Complete assigned maintenance requests accurately and in a timely manner
Qualifications
- Previous porter, handyman, maintenance, building operations, or custodial experience preferred
- Experience working in a school, religious center, community facility, residential building, or commercial property is a plus
- General knowledge of basic repairs, tools, painting, plumbing, furniture assembly, and facility maintenance
- Ability to recognize when a repair requires a licensed professional
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential safety or maintenance problems
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple assignments
- Reliable, punctual, trustworthy, and responsive
- Professional and respectful when interacting with students, parents, staff members, visitors, and community members
- Comfortable working in an Islamic center and school environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb stairs, and perform physical tasks for extended periods
- Ability to safely use ladders and basic hand or power tools
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or move approximately 50 pounds
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as needed
Schedule
- Full-time or part-time availability may be considered
- Morning, daytime, evening, and weekend availability may be required
- Schedule may vary depending on school operations, programs, events, facility rentals, and emergency maintenance needs
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is not someone who waits to be told about every issue. We are looking for someone who regularly walks through the facility, notices what needs attention, completes tasks properly, and takes pride in keeping NYCMC clean, safe, organized, functional, and welcoming.

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour
