Road Crew Equipment Operator
Terlingua Ranch, Texas | Big Bend Region
About POATRI
The Property Owners' Association of Terlingua Ranch, Inc. (POATRI) supports one of the largest privately owned land communities in Texas, bordering Big Bend National Park. We maintain essential infrastructure across a rugged, remote desert landscape, including more than 1,100 miles of dirt roads that provide critical access for property owners, residents, emergency services, and visitors.
About the Position
If you'd rather be behind the controls of a grader than behind a desk, this could be the job for you.
We're looking for an experienced Equipment Operator to join our Road Crew and help maintain the roads that keep Terlingua Ranch connected. This is hands-on work that requires skill, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions in a remote environment.
What You'll Do
- Operate heavy equipment, including motor graders, loaders/backhoes, and dump trucks
- Maintain and repair dirt roads across varied desert terrain
- Evaluate road conditions, including drainage, erosion, and surface wear
- Respond to weather-related damage, including flooding and washouts
- Complete work orders and coordinate with other team members
- Perform routine equipment inspections and maintain service logs
- Help keep the equipment yard and shop clean, organized, and safe
What We're Looking For
- Experience operating heavy equipment (motor grader experience strongly preferred)
- Valid Texas driver's license and CDL
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field
- Knowledge of road maintenance, drainage, and basic grading principles
- Comfortable working in remote areas and navigating with maps or GPS
- Professional communication skills when interacting with property owners
- Dependable, adaptable, and willing to work in changing weather and terrain conditions
The Work Environment
This position covers a large, remote area where every day brings something different. You'll spend most of your time outdoors operating equipment, assessing road conditions, and solving problems in the field. While much of the work is independent, you'll also work closely with a small team and occasionally interact with property owners, making professionalism and good communication important.
Why Work Here?
- Help maintain the roads that connect an entire community
- Work in one of the most unique landscapes in Texas
- Varied projects and meaningful, hands-on work
- Small team where your experience and initiative matter
- Incredible desert scenery and some of the darkest night skies in the country
Benefits
- Paid time off
- Dental and vision insurance
- Emergency air evacuation coverage for you and your family
- Employee discounts
- Pool access
Before You Apply
Terlingua Ranch is a remote community with limited nearby services, and housing can be limited. If you enjoy working outdoors, take pride in operating equipment well, and appreciate wide-open spaces, you'll find this to be a rewarding place to work.
