The Substitute Program Leader serves as an on-call member of the expanded learning team, providing coverage for absent staff at various school sites. This position requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to quickly build positive relationships with students and staff in different program environments. The Substitute Program Leader is responsible for maintaining a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment while supervising students, leading activities, supporting academic success, and ensuring compliance with all program and safety requirements.
Accept and respond to substitute assignments on an as-needed basis, often with limited advance notice.
Report to assigned school sites on time, prepared to perform all duties of the Program Leader position.
Adapt quickly to different school sites, student populations, schedules, program requirements, and staff teams.
Participate actively in providing a safe, engaging, and enriching expanded learning program for students.
Maintain regular communication with the Substitute Coordinator regarding availability, scheduling, assignment acceptance, attendance, and employment-related matters.
Follow the direction of the assigned Site Coordinator or designated site leader while working at a school site and comply with all site-specific procedures and expectations.
Supervise groups of up to 20 students while maintaining continuous line-of-sight supervision and ensuring student safety at all times.
Monitor student attendance and whereabouts throughout the program day, ensuring students are accounted for during all transitions and activities.
Actively create lesson plans and lead students in daily enrichment activities, and recreational programming aligned with program goals, grant requirements, and site expectations.
Facilitate a variety of activities including academic support, homework assistance, arts, STEM, leadership development, sports, fitness, recreation, and other enrichment opportunities.
Teach, lead, and actively participate in sports, games, physical activities, and outdoor recreation.
Establish positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate behavioral expectations and effective classroom management practices.
Promote an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment that encourages student engagement, learning, and personal growth.
Support students' social-emotional development through positive role modeling and constructive interactions.
Assist students with homework completion and provide academic support as needed.
Support snack distribution and ensure compliance with food service, health, and safety requirements.
Assist with student sign-in, sign-out, attendance tracking, and parent/guardian release procedures.
Ensure students are safely transitioned between activities, classrooms, playgrounds, and parent/guardian pick-up.
Communicate professionally and effectively with Site Coordinators, program staff, parents/guardians, school personnel, and community partners.
Provide timely and accurate reporting to supervisors regarding student concerns, behavioral issues, incidents, injuries, attendance matters, program successes, and operational challenges.
Follow all Arc policies, procedures, safety standards, emergency protocols, and mandated reporting requirements.
Maintain confidentiality of student, family, and employee information.
Attend and actively participate in all required trainings, meetings, orientations, and professional development activities.
Assist with program setup, cleanup, organization of materials, and maintenance of program spaces.
Utilize technology, program management systems, and communication tools as required.
Travel to various school and program locations as assigned.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support program operations and student success.
Experience working with youth, especially in ethnic and culturally diverse communities
Skilled in age-appropriate classroom and behavior management skills.
Desire to work indoors and outdoors with students.
Availability to work set school programming hours, including before and after school, weekends, and some overnights
Official / unofficial college transcripts that confirm 48+ completed college credits or passing score on academic proficiency exam
Negative TB test result
Pass Live Scan background check
Current CPR Certification for adult, child, and infant
Bilingual English-Spanish preferred
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee must be able to actively supervise children in both indoor and outdoor environments, including walking, running, participating in recreational activities, and responding quickly to emergency situations. The employee must frequently stand and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds.
