Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with the YMCA Mission Statement and purpose of the policies of the Dixon Family YMCA, the Lifeguard will be responsible for the safety, and well-being of participants in aquatic activities in the pool area. Lifeguards will firmly, fairly and tactfully enforce all pool rules, regulations and policies; they will be aware of and promote the YMCA programs and philosophy. Furthermore, the lifeguard will be responsible for pool readings, cleanliness and neatness of the pool area, attending staff meetings, aquatic training sessions, and attending YMCA certification institutes.
As a Lifeguard, your day is focused on one priority above all else: ensuring a safe, welcoming, and positive aquatic environment for every participant who enters the pool.
-
Arrive on time, prepared, and in proper uniform — lifeguard suit, shirt or tank, whistle, fanny pack, and rescue tube in the required position.
- Review pool schedules, temperature logs, depth markers, and daily notations so you are fully aware of the day’s activities.
- Conduct opening procedures, checking the pool deck, equipment placement, and safety readiness before participants arrive.
- Take your assigned guard position, maintaining clear visibility of all pool areas and paying special attention to small children and new swimmers.
- Practice preventive lifeguarding — staying alert, scanning consistently, and identifying potential hazards before they become emergencies.
- Enforce pool rules and safety guidelines in a professional, respectful manner to maintain a safe and pleasant environment.
- Greet members warmly, provide directions when needed, and model YMCA Service Standards.
- Respond immediately and confidently to any emergencies, following proper rescue, first aid, CPR, AED, and oxygen administration procedures as trained.
- Complete accurate documentation including incident reports, pool usage counts, and required pool readings.
- Maintain a neat pool deck by organizing equipment and reporting any hazards or maintenance concerns promptly.
- Participate in in-services and ongoing trainings to sharpen rescue skills and keep certifications current.
- Remain attentive at all times — no distractions — modeling professionalism as a trained and ready rescuer.
- Follow proper closing procedures, ensuring the pool area is secure, equipment is stored appropriately, and all doors are locked before leaving your post once relieved.
- Keep your timecard accurate and attend required department and staff meetings.
Throughout your shift, you serve as both protector and role model — exemplifying physical fitness, mental focus, professionalism, and the values of the YMCA. Your vigilance, dependability, and presence create a safe space where individuals and families can swim, learn, and grow with confidence.
If you are alert, responsible, and passionate about water safety, this role offers the opportunity to make an immediate and meaningful impact every day.
