A water transfer operator typically works in the oilfield, moving large volumes of water from a source (like a pit, pond, or pipeline) to well sites or ponds for drilling or fracking operations. Their main job is to safely set up, operate and monitor the pumps fluid levels, hoses, and pipelines that move this water. Keep accurate records while working long shifts in tough weather. Core duties
- Set up and rig down temporary water transfer systems (flat hose, poly line, surface hose, and connections) from the water source to the well pad.
- Load and unload pipe, hose, pumps, generators, and related equipment onto trucks or trailers for transport to and from locations.
- Install, start, and monitor transfer pumps and generators, adjusting valves and pump rates to maintain target flow and tank levels without running dry or overflowing.
- Walk and inspect lines regularly for leaks, pressure issues, or hazards; assist with containment and spill cleanups when needed.
- Operate common hand and power tools to assemble, repair, or maintain hoses, fittings, and small equipment.
- In some roles, coordinate with consultants and truck drivers to schedule and direct water hauling to and from locations.
- Keep basic logs and reports of water volumes moved, equipment checks, and any incidents, following company and customer procedures.
- Keep fluid levels on pumps up to standards. Fuel, oil and coolant levels.
Work conditions and physical demands
- Work almost entirely outdoors in weather (heat, cold, wind, snow, mud), often on remote locations.
- Frequent walking, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to around 50 lbs, sometimes repeatedly during line deployment and pickup.
- Long hours.
- Exposure to noise, moving equipment, and oilfield traffic, requiring consistent use of PPE. (Hard hat, safety glasses, FR clothing, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).
Typical requirements
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; some positions prefer or require CDL, but many “operator/tech” roles do not.
- Ability and willingness to pass pre-employment drug testing and background checks.
- Prior oilfield or water transfer experience.
- Must have hard hat, safety glasses, FR clothing and gloves.
- Must have Truck or reliable transportation.
