West Coral Communications is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Utility Locator to join our growing telecommunications team. The Utility Locator is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground telecommunications facilities before excavation and construction activities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe operations, protecting existing infrastructure, and supporting underground construction crews.
The ideal candidate has previous utility locating experience, can work independently, and is committed to safety, accuracy, and quality.
Responsibilities
- Locate and mark underground telecommunications facilities using electronic locating equipment.
- Read and interpret utility maps, construction prints, and locate tickets.
- Accurately mark underground facilities in accordance with industry standards and color codes.
- Respond to locate requests within required timeframes.
- Communicate effectively with construction crews, project managers, and utility owners.
- Verify facility locations and identify potential conflicts before excavation begins.
- Document completed locates using company software and required paperwork.
- Perform basic troubleshooting when facilities cannot be located.
- Maintain locating equipment and company vehicle.
- Follow all company safety policies and state One Call regulations.
Qualifications
- Previous utility locating experience preferred (telecom experience highly preferred).
- Experience locating underground telecommunications facilities, including fiber optic and copper cable.
- Ability to read construction drawings, utility maps, and locate records.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to walk long distances and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience locating telecommunications infrastructure for companies such as Windstream, Kinetic, AT&T, or similar providers.
- Knowledge of underground construction practices.
- Experience using industry-standard locating equipment.
- Previous experience working with 811 or One Call systems.
